Activity Forums Adobe After Effects New G5 graphics card question

  • New G5 graphics card question

I’m specing out a new G5 for purchase at work. Budget is tight.

Is it wiser to purchase the 2.3Ghz system with one of the high end graphics cards such as the ATI Radeon X850 XT or the top end 2.7Ghz with the standard ATI 9650. Both cards have same Vram.

All this is considering that it’s for an after effects/photoshop station.

So, which is more important, processor or graphics card on the G5?

Also, I’m more concerned with interactivity with many layers rather than the actual rendering time since that’s my coffee break time. Thanks for any help here.

Definitely the processor, not the graphics card. If you were relying heavily on a GPU-intensive application like Motion, the decision might be different, but in AE land the CPU is the most important factor.

Currently, the graphics card doesn’t affect AE very much — it’s not the same as working in a 3D app that uses OpenGL effectively. But if you’re considering buying Apple’s Motion, graphics cards (and RAM) mean a lot. The Radeon X800 would be my choice, because it’s fast and only takes up one slot.

To better answer your question, I don’t think that AE layer interaction will be affected by the choices you’ve listed. Either will be quite fine.

    Anybody else?
