I’m working on a project to simulate a mirror reflecting the opposite direction of a 3d “world” in AE. Pretty interesting study. I’ll post my findings…

  • Just take the 2 reveals and precompose them into another comp. Put a white matte in between to “hold” the alpha and then time reverse the other reveal so that it starts white and fades black.

Then you have a single layer that fades in from black, holds white, then fades out black again. Use this precomp as a track matte for your layer.

I’m working on a tutorial for this. It’s called camera projection. It’s a bit tricky to set up but very useful. The key is using a spot light to transmit light of a layer on to your solid surfaces.

Try the adobe DNG converter to create the universal raw files because some of the new cr2’s from canon cams are not supported. Although If your cam does make generic raw, then just import it in AE and select image sequence check box. Use interpret settings to readjust raw after import.

Use the export movie function and select flash FLV. In the settings there is an option to retain alpha. Make sure you use a background color in your comp similar to the bg of your flash movie.

You can create a 3D Null object and link Point of Interest to it with a pick whip expression.

Then move the null around to where you want it and orbit the camera as needed. Remember though if you keyframe the position of the camera with the orbit tool it will interpolate “linearly”; otherwise meaning not in a circle as the orbit tool may seem to dictate but straight from one point to the other.

    Cheers,
