  • Opening an AE8 file in AE7

Posted by Graeme Duncan on April 28, 2007 at 11:07 am

I recently downloaded the After effects Cs3 preview to have a quick look at what I can be expecting in the next update. I then began creating a small project in it (as It is the only version I have at home), and was looking to be able to work on it at the computer labs at university also.

However the computer labs have only AE7 installed, and upon trying to open up the file I get the error message telling me that the file was created in after effects 8 and as such cannot be opened in ae7. I am pretty sure that I have not used any features which are new to ae8 in the project.

Is there any way to save a file in cs3 in a form of “compatability mode” so that I may be able to open it in ae7?

    Thanks in advance

Thought as much. I knew that it was impossible between 7 and 6.5, but I was wondering (and possibly hoping) that somehow it might have been changed in 8.

    Thanks alot anyway.

I don’t think I ever saw a project file-based application (ie, a non-destructive editor) which would be backwards compatible and allow you to open a newer file in an older version of the program. I mean, there must be an odd exception somewhere out there, but as far as video and design applications go…
