NTSC DVD players have no problem adding the pulldown to get to 29.97″

So how does that look visually (aspect ratio, resolution, black bars etc) compared to converting PAL>NTSC first before using Compressor for m2v transcoding?

Thanks for that.
Turns out that it was a modem problem.
With the changes at the Cow the modem got blocked to the Cow.
The solution was to turn off the modem for 15 secs.

Use Compressor to crop out that overscan and encode for web at the same time, no masking necessary.

Don’t, you are distorting the picture. Leave it as is.
The black bars are in the overscan area and won’t show on a TV.
You are getting full 480×720 res. this is how the Canon DV cameras do it, they

All NTSC mpeg content is 720×480
even the over the air content.”

When Compressor is fed a 720×486 file to transcode to mpeg2, it automatically crops lines off the top and bottom to create the 720×480 mpeg2 file

So how exactly did you create this, hopefully not with QuickTime conversion which results in re-compression.
IMHO direct from FCP can produce what you are seeing, which is really a gamma change.
Be sure to try export>QuickTime movie, and feed that to compressor.

2 reference movie
3 self-contained movie
