    Hi,

I have a used XL1. For some reason I’m not getting a full 720×480 resolution. There are black bars on both the right and left sides. Is this a camera problem or is there a workaround or am I just doing something wrong? For now I actually stretched out just the horizontal to fit in AE but I’m losing quality that way.

    Thanks,

    Todd

Don’t, you are distorting the picture. Leave it as is.
The black bars are in the overscan area and won’t show on a TV.
You are getting full 480×720 res. this is how the Canon DV cameras do it, they
    ignore the overscan area.

    Cheers

Thanks! Yeah, I knew I was distorting it, but besides the output to DVD I also have my videos on the web so that overscan shows up. I’m just gonna mask the web videos.

    Thanks!

Use Compressor to crop out that overscan and encode for web at the same time, no masking necessary.

    Cheers
