Do you have any experience with NLEs? 3 months self- teaching is probably optimistic.
The one must-have reference is Lisa Brenneis FCP for Macintosh from Peachpit Press.
(Read the first part before you buy anything! )
IMHO get a cheap dv camera and work with your own media towards your goal.
Quicker than tutorials, and you will get a better idea of your hardware requirements.Cheers

OK guys,
The purpose of my question was to clear up a question I posted on the DVD forum-“In a looping menu I need to pick a specific last frame, so that the loop will be contiguous and smooth,
eg. looping a sequence of a pendulum swinging requires accurate outgoing frame and incoming frame selection.
I’m not familiar with doing this by timecode in FCP.
In FCP, the blue arrowhead marks the outpoint of a clip or sequence,
Does this outpoint include the last frame, or do I need to back up one frame?
The question is now to preserve this accuracy in the mpeg2 file.”How do I avoid a “GOP leap”?

Hey wait all you guys, no-one has mentioned the Frame Control tab in Compressor to properly resize the conversion. Its all in the manual!
It takes forever so you might want to cluster some Macs, the results are BRILLIANT, second only to AlchemistCheers

If I read you correctly you are exporting the 44.1kHz audio that needs rendering in the FCP T-L (identified by the red bar) as AIFF files that you then set to be converted to 48.00kHz
This is exactly how QuickTime does it, infact it IS QT handling this conversion.
Like you, I don’t like iTunes logic for this, so if you want to convert before FCP editing, open the audio in QT and then:-
QT export >sound to AIFF>Options 48kHz stereoCheers
