November 6, 2008 at 8:44 pm in reply to: Mask feathering not very soft?

[Miles Conder] “When i do a mask i increase the feathering to maximum with little effect other than a softer edge”

I am able to create a mask and adjust the feather to 1000 pixels. It creates a great, soft mask that feathers nicely.

You can also create an image with a gradient and use it as an image mask. You would then have precise control over the mask because of the gradient.

November 6, 2008 at 2:45 pm in reply to: My list of Apple Motion issues 🙂

I have tried to recreate the issues you describe and do not seem to be able to do so. There are differences in our systems that could play into the problems. I am running 10.4.11, rather than 10.5.5. I also am doing all my work in NTSC formats.

After you do a system rebuild and reinstall, do the issues occur immediately on new projects or on old projects? Do these issues show up after working in Motion for a few days/weeks? Have you tried deleting you Motion preferences?

    Macintosh HD/Users/workstation/Library/Preferences/com.apple.motion.plist

I have found that I need to trash this file occasionally when Motion begins to behave in an odd way.

[Justin Heaney] “Are there any forms of HD available (in the prosumer range) that give us full raster 1920 by 1080”

Check out Sony EX-3. It is a nice camera that shoots 1920×1080 with the larger 2/3 inch chip. It is in the higher end of the prosumer camera range.

To turn on the camera, click view>3D Overlays>3D Scene Icons. If that does not bring back your icons, you may need to delete the Motion preferences.

    Check this preference folder

    Mac HD>Users>Computer>Library>Preferences

The preference folder within your users directory should contain the motion preference file.

    Trash your preferences.

    Library>Preferences>com.apple.motion.plist

    This should resolve the issue.

October 31, 2008 at 1:32 pm in reply to: Make an Object Explode

You should use the particle replicator, but use a particle other than your crystal ball. In Library>Content>Particle Images there are a few irregularly shaped objects that would resemble fractured glass when flying through space.

I was able to create a believable fracture of a glass vase using the Geo10 particle and adjusting the Cell Controls for all different kinds of Randomness in Speed, Life, Angle, Spin and Scale. I used a Point Shape with 3D turned on and had the particle emit in all directions. When the vase hits the ground the particles emit from that point and expand outward randomly. Set the Initial number to a high value and set birth rate to zero so that once the fracture occurs, you aren’t getting more particles emitting from an object that does not exist.

[Josh Greytak] “In easy setup I can only find DV NTSC 48 kHz(23.98) or DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic.”

You shot in HDV so you can’t use a DV setting to capture your footage. You need to use an HDV easy setup. In Easy Setup, make sure your format is HD, choose the 23.98 fps Rate, and select one of the Setups in the Use dropdown box.

October 30, 2008 at 8:51 pm in reply to: Image Masks in Motion

[Mark Dowd] “How do I add a custom image mask to a video clip?”

If you are simply wanting to mask out an object or area in a single video clip, load the clip into a group. Click on the Mask Tool (Option B for the bezier mask tool) and begin to mask out the object. Once you complete the mask, you will have a tab called Mask in the Inspector that you use to make adjustments to the mask.

You can also create a shape, whether using the bezier tool or the shapes in the library and use that as a mask by making it an image mask. Place your clip in a group and then create a new group and place your shape in Group 2. Highlight your clip in Group 1 and control-click or right mouse click and select image mask. In your inspector you will have a well for the shape in Group 2. Click on the shape in Group 2 (not the Group) and drag it to the well in the Inspector. Turn off Group 2.

[Nick Greiner] “can I load footage from the camera directly into FCP 6 WITHOUT the Sony “XDcam Transfer” plug-in?”

We shoot with XD HDCAM and you cannot import footage directly into FCP without using the Sony Transfer plug-in.
