Can I load XDCam footage directly into FCP 6?
Posted by Nick Greiner on October 30, 2008 at 6:01 pmI have an XDcam pdw-530 and FCP 4 (very outdated but I don’t edit much). Before I do a lot of expensive upgrading, can I load footage from the camera directly into FCP 6 WITHOUT the Sony “XDcam Transfer” plug-in? Apparently the plug-in won’t work w/ my processor – powerbook G4 1.25 GHZ.
Thanks

My camera is SD only and I’m wondering if I can avoid the Sony plug-in if I shoot in dvcam 25 or even imx 50.

We shoot with XD HDCAM and you cannot import footage directly into FCP without using the Sony Transfer plug-in.

You still need the plug-in as your DV files are still in a .mxf wrapper. The plugin is needed to convert the .mxf files to .mov files.

The lastest version of XDCam Transfer says it requires a PowerPC G5 2ghz CPU, but I only have a G4 1.25ghz. Do you think I could make it work, perhaps with an older version of XDCam transfer (which seem to be available)

November 4, 2008 at 3:40 amthat camera shoots SD in an MXF wrapper which is not natively supported in Quicktime
the Sony XDCAM Transfer app will rewrap those MXF files as MOV’s which FCP can then handle natively … and despite what you may have read it DOES work on non intel Macsif you are looking for a native MXF import solution then you can look at MXF4QT from MXF4Mac

I take it from your answer you think the PDZK-P1 software (ie “XDCAM transfer) will run on my computer even though it is a G4 1.25ghz

November 5, 2008 at 8:53 amWell Nick, I must say I’ve never tried it on a G4 specifically but it certainly does work on a G5 which is also a PPC based machine, so yes, I do think the PDZK-P1 software should install and run on your machine. Bottom line, try it and report back.
