One thing to do in the new sequence that has the correct sequence settings is to highlight all clips in the timeline, control-click (right mouse click), click . All attributes should be removed from the clips to allow them to return to original formatting. This “should” correct the clips.

I had the Motion Path along the replicated object rather than the group. It works like it is supposed to when you have behaviors where they are supposed to be. . . .

To apply that effect to multiple clips, highlight all the clips and drag your favorite effect to the timeline and lay it on one of the highlighted clips. It will be applied to all clips in your highlight.

October 29, 2008 at 2:55 pm in reply to: transfer from VHS in DVD

Your options to transfer a VHS to DVD are limited and all of them require you have additional hardware.

Option 1: Connect your VCR to a DVD recorder and slam record the tape to DVD. This is the easiest and less time consuming method if you have access to a DVD burner. I purchased a DVD player/burner from Best Buy for about $60 (Samsung open box). It has been a wonderful find.

Option 2: You will need to purchase a device that will allow you to capture an Analog format (VHS) to digital. There are several options, but one I would recommend is the Canopus ADVC110 (price is around $230). It will allow you to connect your VCR to your computer and capture the footage in FCP. You have the option to then edit the video and output a final video to DVD via DVDSP.

I’m sure there are other viable options out there, but these are methods that I have used and have received good results.

October 23, 2008 at 9:04 pm in reply to: Problem importing XDCAM footage into final cut

Kona3 does not play 1440×1080. The only settings in FCP Audio/Video Settings at 1080 is for 1920×1080. When we try to play 1440 footage through the Kona to our preview monitors we get nothing but colored snow.

We abandoned trying to edit native XDCAM footage because of this issue and digitize all footage to ProRes. How are you able to preview/play 1440 footage through Kona?

Walter . . .are you using the EX1 or the XDCam cameras? When you transfer the footage, are you able to being it in Pro Res? We quit using the Sony XD Transfer because we end up editing in ProRes and it required too much render time. We also found that Kona3 doesnt play well with 1440 footage.

October 23, 2008 at 1:25 pm in reply to: Lighting effect, Revealing objects with light.

To create the look you cannot use lights in Motion. Lights do not interact with objects to cast shadows or to pass through doors. You will need to create a shape object with the color you want you light to be and then add some filters to get the look you want. I was able to get a decent look quickly by using the Light Rays Filter. By key framing various parameters you can get the feel that the light is falling into the space. By key framing the color of the door you can get the door color revealed from black to green. You will need to play around with various objects and colors to really get a quality light ray look, but using filters and emitters you should be able to get the look.

October 23, 2008 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Add Dolly cam to a specific group with a mask

You don’t add camera’s to groups. You add camera’s to the scene. A camera allows you to change the perspective of view for 3D groups. If a group is not marked as 3D, the camera will not effect that group. So to have your camera dolly in the group with the chroma key, have all other groups set to 2D and the chroma key group to 3D and the camera moves will only effect that group.

October 22, 2008 at 3:37 pm in reply to: does 44.1 khz audio play at different speed then 48 khz?

[jason leue] “does 44.1 khz audio play at different speed then 48 khz?”

Yes. There is a significant difference. There will be sync issues using 44.1kHz.

[jason leue] “I’m capturing audio with a Olympus digital recorder, capturing video with hv30 30p.”

Are you capturing audio and video with different devices? If so, that will present several issues with sync and alignment.

Need more details to be able to offer assistance.

October 21, 2008 at 8:09 pm in reply to: capture question

The frame rate difference may through a curve ball into the discussion, however, we do this kind of thing between SD and HD frequently. All of our footage is 29.97, but we will often log footage as SD, edit, and the batch capture to HD using the log and capture data with a new easy setup.

Things to consider would be . . . does the deck allow for frame rate conversion on the fly? Do you have a Kona (or similar) that will allow you to upconvert/downconvert in real time? The card is a critical piece in the process.

[Joe Procopio] “are you saying if I select the DVCPro 23.98 capture codec, and recapture the footage, it will read the 29.97 tape, but make the new clips 23.98?”

My only concern is with the frame rate, and that is because I have never had to do such a conversion. Otherwise, it should recapture the footage using the new easy setup.
