the problem with USB is that it transfers data in packets as opposed to a stream. That means there are bursts of data as opposed to a steady amount of info coming through. My personal experience tells me that Fire wire is the way to go here, but if anyone has had good experiences with DV and USB, please chime in.

Drag the folders from windows explorer (or Mac Finder) into the project pannel. You must drage the folders containing the image sequence. It can;t be a folder containing a folders with image sequences.

this will import all images in each folder as an image sequences.*

Next, drop all of the imported sequences into the render queue – this will automatically create a comp for each sequence that is already set up in the render queue.

    * (this assumes your AE import preferences are set to the defualt of importing folders as sequences. If you;ve tamplered with this, or it;s not working, go into the import preferences and change this. I am not infront of AE, and I can;t remember the preference name.)

I think this will make a good workflow podcast…

the light streaks ould also be CC Light Rays, which comes with AE. It;s not anything near as good as Shine, but I think you could get that very effect with CC Light Rays.

Make usre both Word and AE are running. Copy the text from word, then double click on the text layer and past via CTRL+V.

    It works. Sometimes.

Some days I can copy from Word to AE, and some days not. I have not figured out the issue yet, but if I shut down AE and restart, this usually solves the issue. Well… sometimes.

Again – no idea why it’s happening.

time remapping is a way of forcing after effect to show certian frames at certain times. It can be used to change the timing of video, retiming animation in a nested composition, even mouth animation for character lip synching.

I cover 2 different uses of it in my tutorials:

    -Fixing Scaling issues Part 2

    -Lyp Synching

you can find those tutorials here:

bTW – by smaller, I mean smaller than an uncompressed AVI. those things are 1.75 GB per minute. depending on what you’ve got in your video, you could save a lotr of space with animation compression. But not compared to a quicktime with sorenson compression – which is a lossy compression format, and which (like all compressed video files) takes a lot longer to render because it is rendering and compressing at the same time.

Generally, one of the best options for pro-quality and smaller file size is Quicktime Animation Compression. I output everything that way. Quicktime with animation compression is a lossless compression format.

Speed wise – as far as Renders go, I don’t know if there’s a difference. However, A video file (as opposed to an image sequence) will work faster in most NLE’s.

  • I think it’s holdover from older days, but i could be wrong. You have a lot less control over the render this way.

On the other hand – flash export is only available this way (at least I think it is).

But I;d stear your students towards the render Queue. It may not be as easy, but it’s generally the best way to do things – more importantly, in a pro environment, you need to be familiar with the opotions there.

ideally, you should film yourself in front of a green screen. ANd once you do that, key out the green background in a program like After Effects or an NLE, and then you can easily drop anything behind you.

  • It’s always about the frame rate…

Ther tipoff was that it was halfway behind – meaning half the frame rate.
However, I’d like to mention (in case someone turns up this string in a search) that some particle effects take a few moments before appearing – such as if thier initial transparency is all the way up and fades in. In those cases, you also won’t get a perfect match – When that happens, I like to push my particle effects up in the timeline a little bit so the effect happens exaclty when i want it to.

    Make sense?
