June 30, 2005 at 4:13 pm in reply to: After Effects Playback speed issue

Windows media player plays a compressed non-dynamic video.

After Effects, has to calculate every frame – not just footage – effects, positional info, motion blur. All of that ios calculated on the fly. You must do a RAM review to commit it to your computers Memory, so that it can play it back in real time.

Not that the moment you make any change to your animation, you will lose some or all of your cached frames – meaning you’ll need to do another RAM preview.

  • Thanks folks. Yeah, there’s always just a little more you can do with any project. But if I did all the work for you, where would the fun be in that?

I don;t see th piont in using an AE 3D camera. It’s going to be harder to match.

Just zoom in, and parent your video to the picture that you are zooming so that you can crossfade. Also, turn on motion blur, and myabe select your scaling (zooming) keyframes and use the keyframe assistant called Exponential scale – which fixes the scaling issues you get on a massive scaling.

    https://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/opengl.html

It looks like the ATI Radeon 9600/9700/9800 or the NVideo GeForce FX 5200 are your best bet. However, I have had a lot of luck with the GeForce Line.

A lot of people have trouble with ATI, but then they also have troble with nVidea too.

My money is on nVidea, but that’s just my opinion.

Also, important to point out, your 720×480 footage is probably not insquare pixels, and pIllusion stuff is. It may be causeing the footage to come in at the wrong size. Your program may be squishing down the footage thinking it has a different pixel aspect ratio.

    You see: NTSC DV 720 X 480 (Non-Square PAR) = 648 X 480 (Square PAR)

You are better off exporting your footage as square pixels, and then bringing that into pIllusion.

Most NLE’s can tell (or you tell them) that you are importing square pixel footage, and then automaticallty converts it to the current aspect ratio.

If your program is reading this as square pixels, then square pixel footage at 720×480 is going to be altered in size in a non square comp.

here are some looping debris sequences I made a while back. If you use them as the emitter shape for one of your emitters, it may help:

June 27, 2005 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Color correcting a specific color in a shot

Effect > Image control > Change To Color. Select the color you want to change, and pick the new color. make sure to tell the effect to use all 3 color parameters (Hue, saturation, Lightness) from the pull down.

If your footage has other areas with the same coloir, you may need to duplicate the layer, and create a rough junk matte matte (a losse animated mask) around the racket.

June 27, 2005 at 1:26 pm in reply to: Ram preview needs at least two fm’s

I get this problem a lot when there is a memory leak. If you have not already done so, shut down and restart the computer.

    That usually clears it up.

June 26, 2005 at 1:47 pm in reply to: Widescreen

You didn’t mention if it was PAL or NTSC

OK, the 9:5 ratio is based on the square pixel equivilent of the non-sqaure pixel aspect ratio.

You see widescreen and non widescreen have the same dimensions, but a different pixel aspect ratio – meaning the pixels are actually a different size. That’s why you get that number in partheses like (1.2) – it’s an indicator of pixel aspect ratio – the difference between the hight of the pixel vs. its width.

    The 9:5 ratio should be 864 x 480 – 9×96=864, 5×96=480
    Also, 864/1.2 = 720

That’s how you end up with 720×480 for both widescreen and non widescreen.

Personally, I prefer to work in square pixels. If you use the sqare pixel equivilent in building your art or animation, you don’t have to work with squished or stretched images, and you get to see what it will look like when it is actually on your TV. If you work at the square pixel equivilent in either photoshop or AE (and you make sure AE or PS is working at the square pixel aspect ratio), then, when you are done, you can just take everything (pictures or full AE compositions) and drop them into the DV widsescreen sized project, and AE will automatically adjust them to fit properly.

AE has a tool for looking at non-square comps as square (it will streach or squish to show you eaht it looks like) but everything is jagged and a little distorted, and may later give you some bad surprises on your TV screen. Also, there are setups that allow you to view it properly on an NTSC or PAL Monitor, but most people don’t have that available to them.

That being the case, Here are the non-square project sizes, followed by the sqaure pixel equivilent sizes.

    NTSC/DV widescreen 720 X 480 = 864 X 480
    Pal DV Widescreen 720 X 576 = 1024 X 576

Hope this wasn’t to confusing. There’s an article here called Dr. Strangepixel which explains this in a lot of detail, but the forum search isn’t working for me, so I can’t find it. Also, I disagree with the author on some of the square pixel equivilents, but then I’m no expert on this, and while the numbers I gave you work, there might be better ways to do it. You should play around and see what works.
