This is similar to a process called cloning. In phostoshop, you clone parts of stil images to replace other parts.
In After Effects, and other compositing software you can do the same.
In those instances, you would usually move the cloned area around so that it moves with the video, but in your situation, the spot always stays the same. I like your idea. If you can post more info on it, it may help other people.

That’s probably one of the better methods of doing that actually.
Create your sign in Photoshop as seperate layers fopr the letters. Then add the glow layer effect. For any letters you want to blink on and off, make sure you make aversion of that letter without a glow, and put it below the glow layer.
Then in AE just animated the glowing layer’s visibility.
There are other ways to do it, but this is probably the simplist way to do it, and in a case like this, there’s no reason to complicate things.
If you wanted to give it some extra kick (I haven’t tried this myself) make duplicates of every layer, so you have a glow version and a non glow version, and in AE, set the transfer/blending mode for the glow version to “add.” Only animate the opacity of the layer you want to blink on and off, but the glow with the add property will also effect anything that falls behind the glow, lending to reality.
The reason I said make a glow and non glow version for all is so that the blinking letter doesn’t look different than the rest. The add mode sort of lets you see through it a little, and you’ll be able to tell that there is a “special” layer in there – in the way that in hanna barberra cartoons you know which rocks are going to fall, becasue while the rest look nice, 3 of them are more drawn.

are you doing a ram preview or just hitting the spacebar? Hitting spacebar is not RAM previewing – just playback, and it often runs slowly. On one machine it could be faster depending on your hardware, and it may have nothing to do with your processor. It could be you video card too (see below).
A Ram Preview will generally playback in realtime since it’s all queud up – though sometimes at 100% size, on heavy projects, my audio has been off.
Check your Ram Preview settings (in the time controls window) to make sure it’s not skipping frames.
Have you set up an image cache folder where AE can dump ram previewed frames – this helps play things back, and speed up RAM preview for untocuhed frames – they don’t get lost.
Other issues that could come into play here (more with play back, than playback with RAM Preview)…
Are you using 3D? Is your 3D card working properly? Maybe it needs a driver update, or perhaps AE doesn’t support your card? If you are trying to playback 3D in realtime, also make sure Open GL is on in AE.

1. How do you tell beforehand how many frames the clips has as it is always preset to 120?
Depends on your Frames per Second. But basically, if your footage is 30 FPS, 10 seconds of video would be 300 frames.
However, pIllusion can check this for you. In the open footage dialog, on the right side, under the image of your movies first frame, it tells you how many frames it is.
Also when you import it, in the BG image options dialog, it will tell you what the last frame number is. in addition, if for some reason you still don;t know how many frames it is, just scroll down in the timeline until your footage stops. That’s how many frames it is.
If you know your FPS, you can set pIllusion to use the same FPS in the project settings. (View > Project settings).

1. Is it possible to precomp something, and still have it retain it’s 3-d qualities once put into a new 3d comp.
Yes – After you drop it into your new 3D comp, turn on the colapse transformations switch. This makes it react like a 3D layer. However, it is still considered a 2D layer as far as transformation (Scale, rotation, position) is concerned.
To make it work like a full 3D layer – just make it a 3D layer, as usual.
If you only do it as a 3D layer, but no colapse transformations, then you get a flat image that’s a 3D layer. Make sure to do both.
2. Often when rendering I will recieve the error message “error occured while using advanced 3d plug-in.” What does this mean? I am using a pc, with a new Asus motherboard, but I am just using the on board GFX card. It works fine, but could this be the issue? Would it help to by another graphics card with some ram for bkup?
I’m not sure about this. It may be that your video card does not support all of the Advanced 3D features. Or it could be that your card doesn’t have enough on board memory. It could also be that your drivers need updating.
These are just guesses though.

For some of my projects I purchase music at FlyingHands.com – a cheep royalty free music site. They have a lot of styles of BG music to choose from.

June 23, 2005 at 10:20 pm in reply to: Doing rain and keying wet skin (potential postproduction nightmare)After Effects comes with an effect called CC Rain.
My Machine is rendering, so I can;t look at the exact path from the effects menu, but if you go into your effects and presets window (usually next to the time controls window) and type in CC Rain, it will bring it up.
FYI – The effect only comes with Non-educational versions of AE Professional, and it’s a seperate installer on the AE CD.

I hear that in the future everything at Wondertouch will be done by Robots in flying cars…
OK, seriously – Right now they are working on the AE plug-in and the Mac version of 3.0. Alan has mentioned here that there are a bunch of features he’d like to add into thenext release, and a lot of that may be determined by people like you (You know, the ones who use it).
I myself have emailed WT with a list features I’d like to see added. If there’s something you are hoping for in the next version, you can email them and request it. If ebnough people ask for a feature, than it has a better chance of getting added.
Personally, I want a do my work for me while I go out and get coffee button…
