September 12, 2005 at 4:20 pm in reply to: After Effects Crashes after 13 mins of Render. HELP!It’s often a corrupt footage file. try rendering with all of the effects and motion blur off and at half resoultion. This will speed up the following test:
– Set AE to render only around the time in the timeline that it crashes (I assume it crashes at the same time every render).
– Do a test render – If it doesn’t crash, an effect may be to blame. In the past some bugs with certain effects have casued AE to crash at render time. If it still crashes…
– One at a time, Turn off any layers that are visible at the time it crashes, until it stops crashing. The last layer you turned off is probably corrupt.
Hope this helps.

You could do this with dsiplacement maps, or the effect called caustics – these effects displace the pixels to create distortion.
However, you need something to generate the displacement – if you film you actor on a green screen, you can use an effect like echo time to be the source of that distortion, or you could trail particles behind your actor and use that as the source of the distortion.
It would probably look better if you used the actor on alpha (green screened) as you get the exact shape, and you could also use it to generatye a faint motion trail to mix in with the distortion which would look good.
It’s not a “simple” effect, but if you’ve planned ahead for this, you can do it easily enough.

Can you explain the effect you’re trying to do in more detail? What exactly do you want to have happen to the droplets of rain.
Thanks.

Actualy, you can do the crack without it flying apart, but you need the right settings.
Also depending on what you want exactly, you will need to play with the folowing setup in Physics:
– Make a comp 640×480
-Make a solid the same size, and give it the shatter effect.
– Set the viscosity to 1.0 (100%) – This keeps the pieces from flying out
– Set the gravity to 0 – keeps the pieces from falling downDo a ram preview and see if this gioves you what you want. If not – try this…
At frame 0 set the following settings with keyframes:
– Depth 0.10
– Radius 0
– Strenght 0At, say, about 2 seconds set the following keyframes:
– Depth 0.0
– Radius 4.0
– Strength 1.10Hope that helps.

As I said, Volume 2 is not currently in the making, but if I were working on it now, I’d do my best to make sure that people new to the program could follow it easily. Not having seen the AE Plugin, I have no idea how useful this DVD will be with it when it is released. Probably not very.
Take it easy,

September 1, 2005 at 9:12 pm in reply to: Fog 3D destroys Motion Blur data in Alpha ChannelI am not sure what you mean. Fog 3D uses the Z-Depth channel to decide where fog is more concentrated over the image – while it uses a numbers internally, that image is translated out to a white to black image for your viewing pleasure (and comprehension). Since what I suggested is using levels of lightness as an indicator of distance, it should look pretty good. In fact, I know it does, as I’ve done it myself before. It may not give you the control you want over how the fog rolls in (although with the levels effect, it can work), for example, but it does a pretty good job of simulating the foggy depths as AE does it with the fog 3D effect – not a great effect, since it is a 2D fake, but not bad.
Why don’t you render 1 frame the way I mentioned above, and see how it looks. It may be good enough for your needs.
Again, you may want to post this in the Maya or Max forums here (or whatever 3D app your using) – people have been doing this stuff for a while, and the issue probably has a solution that needs to be handled in the 3D app as opposed to AE.
Good luck.

To do that, you’ll need to have footage with an exact matching Alpha Channel (or if the guy already has an alpha channel that matches his shape, that’s perfect). What you do is use that footage as an area emitter mask – which uses the alpha channel of the footage to generate the particles.
You can find the info you need for this in the pIllusion help files under Tutorial 4 – Area Emitter Mask

September 1, 2005 at 12:03 am in reply to: What is the main thing after effects strains on a PC system?you could actually overheat your video card too. My GeForce 4 card goes very active while I’m working in AE – I can hear it’s fan humming – it turns on when using anything with open GL. If you have a card with a fan on it, and it’s not working, it could cause a problem. No idea if it would actually make your PC beep though.

I may have missed something, but could you scan the pages of the calendar and then just use the CC page Turn effect on them. Thjis would make your life a lot easier.
All you’d have to do is set up each page with video the way you want it to look, and then precomp it so you could curl everything on the page together.
