3D implies 3 dimensions – X (left Right) Y (Up Down) And Z (forward and backwards – to create depth)
Since pIllusion works on XY coordinates, and it’s particles don’t ocupy that 3rd dimension of space (and therefore are all on a flat XY spatial grid), it is not 3D.
This isn’t to say it can’t simulate 3D to some degree – in many cases convincingly), but it does not utilize spatial coordinates outside the XY grid.
AS far as your project goes – durring the explosive part, see if you can get vagas to jitter the footage a bit, making it shaky, like an earthquake – with motion blur even better. It will add a lot to the believability of the shot. Good sound FX never hurt either.
Oh and if you can hire john williams to score the scene, and the boston phiharmonic to perform it, that would also be helpful, but you can always rely in prerecorded stuff if they aren’t avaialable 😉

If that fails, you may want to make another emitter with just that particle shape and and make it a “single particle” – This makes the particle live a really long time, and you could then use the visibility property to fade it up and down when you wanted it to disappear.
Just make sure it’s in the same place and looks to be the same size as your current emitter’s particle shape (the image you want to keep on screen) so it matches up.
You can find the Single Particle option in the emitter properties in the particles tab.

What codec are you using for your audio. If it’s not a standard WAV file (PC) or AIFF (Mac), try converting to one of those 2. Even converting the audio to a quicktime file would be helpful. If that works, it’s probably just a codec issue.

Are you only working with pIllusion, or do you have an NLE or compositor that can use Alpha channels like After Effects?
We’ve discussed both options in the forum, so Like Alan said, search for “loops” or “Looping.”

I compress video with sorenson squeeze, which you can tweak a lot for your needs. you can see an example of it in my video tutorial here at the cow, and this has been scrunched down a bunch to play on the internet:

Again, this was really dumbed down in quality for the web. Keep something in mind – no matter what you do, there will ALWAYS be compression artifacts, unless you go uncompressed. Of course, that means you will have a hard time with playback, and so you probbly need to put that to tape.
Between quality and the assurance of smooth playback, DVD is probably your best option. Just make sure to render the DVD video with AE’s best DVD quality settings. It makes the file a lot larger, but it’s worth it.
Dell’s 20 inch monitors seem to have a max resolution of 1600×1200.
Also I imagine that resolution depends on if this is widescreen or not.

I’ve never used Boris, but AE (non-educational version, seperate installer on CD – Cycore Effects)) comes with a rain effect called CC Rain. And you can tweak it to get some nice rain. Also, there is a Lightning and Advanced Lightning effect that may be of help to you as well.
As far as settings go, a lot of it depends on the footage, so try compositing your BG and keyed footage, and either place a solid with the effect in between, or just place the CC rain effect directly on your BG footage. You may even want to add a directional blur to the rain (if on a seperate layer) do make it look more blurry.
