It might be better if you just gave a resolution instead of drawing something. People with different text size settings in their browser will see different sizes.

The only way to get really good quality video ono the web while keeping the file size at a minimum is to use software that is designed to compress cleanly – such as Cleaner or Sorenson Squeeze.

I have my reel at 320×240 at 2.5 minutes and it’s only 10 MB thanks to squeeze.

Otherwise you have to use codecs or formats that while maybe somewhat clean or small, aren’t on a lot of computers.

  • since the 3D channels do not alias and (i’m guesszing here) take moption blur into account, you are better off creating a material (or downloading one) that simulates the white to black 3D depth.

If you don;t know how to do that, I’d suggest visiting the Cow forum for your software (maya, Max…etc.,) and asking other compositors how they do that.

Once you create an exact duplicate of your RGB render with the Fake Z render (This will be a seperate render pass), you can bring that white to black Z footage into AE, and use it as a Lumma Matte for the fog element/footage – that fog layer goes between the RGB layer and the matte layer (Z depth “fake” render you made). You can use the level effect on the matte layer to control how the fog appears, and even fills up the scene.

Chris meyer has a great section on this in volume 2 of her books.

without knowing the context of that video, it’s hard to say exactly what they are doing there. Hpwever, often, you create several render passes to get a really good composite. SOmetimes you use different transfer modes with the different passes to create a really realistic match of the 3D and BG elements.

In maya, you can shut off an object’s primary visibility, so that you can see it, but it doesn;t rernder. It does, however still create a shadow and reflection of itself, if your Use BG material (or any material in the scene) can recieve a shadow or reflection.

Are you using any special kind of codec?

I usually see that error when I’m using or rendering to a video file or audio file AE doesn’t like. By that I mean it is using a codec that doesn;t work proprly with AE.

Try rendering to a different format (or different compression codec) or try converting you source footage to something else.

usually they use an invisible material on the ground, and that material has the ability to accept shadows or even reflections, but that’s it.

in maya the material is called “Use Background”

You can either composite it there or in AE.

You could also use the video of the 3D model over an empty BG, and then in AE duplicate the 3d footage layer and make it black (using Tint, brightness and contrast) and then add a blur to it to make it look more like a shadow. Then just lower the layer down on the Y-Axis so that it looks like it’s on the ground. You may need to play with one of the distort effects to make the shape look right.

Regardless, there’s no reson to render on a green screen – always render over an empty BG and then use an alpha channel when you output. That way it already comes in to AE with transparency, and you don;t have to deal with green halos or anything.

Sorry It took so long to respond. My PC Died and my laptop is sufering from limited connectivity.

I hope to create a volume 2. It was my original intention, however my doing it is based on sales. If a lot of people buy the DVD, then it’s worth making a second volume.

The plan was for the 2nd volume to cover the AE plugin and any new features in the next pIllusion update. Obviously it will be a little time before I can actually get started, as neither is available at this time.

In the mean time, there might be another training DVD in the works (not PI related) but it’s up in the air.

like I said. it may just be security settings on these Macs. Even if i tell one post to use response notification, the next post I open has been set back to None.

I know. I know… At home on my PC, it works.

Here, at a MAc Based Studio, it doesn’t keep – no matter what I do. Security settings might be too high. And I forget that a lot.

    Sorry.
