  • Sounds like you’re probably running out of memory. Any chance you can try and open it on a machine with more RAM? Other than that, you might call Maxon tech support and see if there’s anything they can do.

There is a preset for Thinking Particles that sends particles along a spline.

Do you have to use AO? You should be able to get a similar effect using multiple lights with soft and/or area shadows.

Use an “align to spline” tag and animate the offset. Or if you have MoGraph you can clone directly onto a spline or use the spline effector.

April 1, 2009 at 4:25 pm in reply to: world/object coordinates system broken

It isn’t broken — it just doesn’t do what you want it to do, unfortunately. There is no direct way to display world axes for an object. The workaround is to put your object in a null that’s aligned to world axes and move the null rather than the object.

The world/object icon actually does work, however, with the x/y/z icons next to it. So for example, if you turn on world coords and disable x and z, dragging off the object in move mode will move the object in the world Y direction.

Kinda crazy, I know, but that’s how it is.

I haven’t upgraded to AE CS4 yet, but my understanding is that the CS3 plugin works with it.

Camera switching is done with the Stage Object. You can read up on its use in the help file.

As far as moving the editor camera around, you can click on the icons next to the camera icon in the object manager to switch to that camera. So you might want to create a set of editing cameras for that purpose.

For the video/plane, create a material and load the video file into the color or luminance channel. Click on the file name after you’ve loaded it and you will get another dialogue in the attributes manager. At the top there is an animation tab. Click on that hit the calculate button (or make appropriate adjustments first). Then drag the material onto your plane. If they have the same aspect ratio that should do it. Otherwise, you can click on the texture tag and set the mapping to flat, then use the texture axis tool to rotate/move/scale the video on your plane.

If you want to see the video play in the viewport, go to the material’s Editor tab and check the “Animate Preview” box. You’ll get smoother playback if you use an uncompressed bitmap sequence vs. a compiled movie.

Hmmm, that is weird. What version are you using?

I’ve had that issue at times when hair dynamics was enabled. If it is you might try turning it off until you’re ready to run some animation tests. The problem is worse if you are displaying hair lines rather than guides in the editor.

March 31, 2009 at 5:12 am in reply to: solid glass object looking like two surfaces

My suggestion is turn on the reflection channel if it isn’t already and put the fresnel shader in there. That should take care of it.

Unrelated, but if you’re using speculars you should also activate the specular color channel and put the effect>normal direction shader in there. That will prevent specular highlights from showing up on the inside surfaces of your glass.

There’s no problem running the demo on a machine with R10 installed. I think you can even run them simultaneously.
