Have you tried doing a standard render with cpu-intensive things like GI, AO, area shadows, motion blur, and AA turned off?

There are a number of liquid simulation options for Cinema, including RealFlow, X-Particles, Navie FX, and perhaps import from Houdini or Blender.

You can make a polygon selection by selecting the polys and creating a polygon selection tag from the Selection menu (Set Selection). Then you can assign that selection to a texture tag by dragging and dropping the poly tag or typing the name into the texture tag’s “Selection” box.

Having said that, it sounds like the biggest issue you’re having is with UV mapping, which generally describes how textures are applied to objects. If your texture tag is set to Projection>UV Mapping then the program will apply textures based upon a flattened version of your mesh. The process of getting a good UV map can be somewhat involved. In your case you can probably avoid that by using Cylindrical projection, but you’ll have to scale and rotate the projection to get it to fit correctly.

I’d suggest you read the help docs on UV projection.

  • GTX 980 is a solid card, but a couple years old. It will work fine in Cinema. Although as Jim said, the native renderers don’t use GPUs, it’s more than adequate for viewport display. Should be fine for AE too.

I would create a plane object and make it editable. Then go into polygon mode and select all polygons. Run the “extrude inner” function with preserve groups unchecked. That will give you the center polygons and they will be selected. Then just drag them down in the Y direction. Delete the plane object’s phong tag so you can see the sharp angles created.

Then use a boolean object to cut out the desired shape.

As far as I can tell the GI pass problem is caused by refraction rather than pure transparency. I don’t know of any workaround.

I don’t have any problem with Nitrobake in R17. Maybe you don’t have the latest version? Anyway, I was able to bake your file. It took a looong time. Key is that you have to turn off render instances in the cloner. You may be able to use SteadyBake once you turn that off.

Unfortunately I can’t think of a way to force the objects onto a specific subset of the matrix particles.

Why don’t you use two matrix objects and two effectors?

You could use joints, clusters, or morphs, or a combination of joints or clusters and morphs.
