Some C4D plugins and add-ons like TurbulenceFD and OctaneRender require a Nvidia graphics card (CUDA), but C4D itself only uses the CPU for rendering.

GTX 980 is a solid card, but a couple years old. It will work fine in Cinema. Although as Jim said, the native renderers don’t use GPUs, it’s more than adequate for viewport display. Should be fine for AE too.
