get a larger external drive and move the library onto that

If they didn’t you would not get the performance increases you want. The processor is only one part of the speed equation, ram plays into that also.

douse disk utility see the drive at all, if not then most likely it is the port on the computer

If you plan of working in HDV learn all you can about the format. The reason it takes so long is because of its GOP structure. Each GOP (group of pictures) needs to have a iFrame. This iFrame contains a complete frame, while every other frame in the GOP is based off of the iFrame. When exporting a HDV sequence the computer must create NEW iFrames, because you have made cuts in between many many iFrames.

well because I have yet to meet anybody has a HD DVD or Blue-Ray DVD player, I have not invested in ether of those methods.
What I currently will offer is a HD video file. I myself and several others I know have a AppleTV. The AppleTV supports 720p 24fpc So I can convert the file to those specs (the new compressor has a preset for this) And the video look great.

Most people wont be able to tell a difference, but it is a bit quicker, Also the way the search feature works in the new version is GREAT.

Yes it douse over right the previous version of safari.
If you really must keep it then move the old file out of the application folder and then install the beta. Just make sure that you rename the old version before moving it back to the apps folder.
However I see no reason that you need the old one the Safari 3 Beta ROCKS.
