    (Cross-post from DV forum)

I’ve been given a Z1 camera for my next shoot and I’m in trouble!

FCP can see my Sony dsr 570 camera fine – but whatever I do I can’t get it to see the Z1.

I’ve tried in Easy Setup PAL-DV with the camera set to DVCAM record and playback, and I’ve tried easy setup HDV with the camera set to HDV record and playback – but in every occaision FCP reports it can’t see the camera/deck.

This is my first time using the Z1.

Can anyone help – I’m flying out tomorrow!

    Thanks,

    Ken.

    >thanks for everybodys help. i had to turn off the downlink converter and also hook up my >camera first before turning on fcp. thanks again!

Tried this – no joy. I suspect there may be a camera fault.

    hi ken,
go into the Z1’s menu settings and make sure its set for pal 50i. your problem might be that its set for ntsc 60i. the Z1 shoots both.

Test the camera and the firewire cable (at least two different cables) on another computer. If the other computer still cannot recognize the camera, then there is probably issue with the firewire port on the camera (i.e. dead).

I rented a Z1 and had the same problem on two different machines, two different platforms (TIger and Windows XP) and two different software pkgs (FCS3 and Adobe Premiere 2.0) The firewire port was bad and the video production company told me that happens alot when novice users plug/unplug the firewire cable while the unit is powered on (there is enough of a power surge in the line to short out the connection). When I swapped out the Z1 for a HVR-1500, all worked perfectly.

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone – have tried all suggestions and think it is indeed a blown f/w connector.

    Best,

    Ken.
