I am exporting an HDV sequence to a quicktime movie so i can make a dvd. It’s saying it will take 7 hours… it’s been about an hour (11 % done) and when it first started i was alarmed that it said “2 hours”. Is this normal for 30 minute sequence?? Usually it only take 20 minutes for non-HDV sequence.

    I have FCP6, a G5 tower dual 2 ghz power PC, 4 gb sdRAM.

HDV can take quite some time, however the timer is usually way wrong anyway, so it doesn’t usually take as long as you’ll think.

As the great video editor Forest Gump once said, “The render timer is like a box of chocolates…”

If you plan of working in HDV learn all you can about the format. The reason it takes so long is because of its GOP structure. Each GOP (group of pictures) needs to have a iFrame. This iFrame contains a complete frame, while every other frame in the GOP is based off of the iFrame. When exporting a HDV sequence the computer must create NEW iFrames, because you have made cuts in between many many iFrames.
