Another iTunes Question from a not so newbie
Hello all
I recently posted here on the cow and followed the wonderful advice I was given
now I have a new situation
I recently filled my 36 gig external hard drive and I still have music and music videos I want to add to my iTunes so that when I eventually ge an ipod I can add all of my material to it
so my question is can I add a second external hard drive or can iTunes only see on location in which case I will have to bite the bullet and use my 250 gig external
or can I keep what I have on the external drive get an ipod load that to it, clear off the drive and put new stuff on drive and then load that in to the ipod
the goal is not to allow my g5’s internal drive to become an iTunes store house
I bought the computer for work purposes (yeah…right)fyi I used the Higher quality AAC setting (256kbps) for my audio files

and then what happens if the ipod is stolen lost or dies.
get a larger external drive and move the library onto that

I’ve tried this and unless you can some how alias the mp3 files in the iTunes Library, there is no way of doing it. The music, or alias of the file, needs to be in the iTunes Library, which can only be in one location.

“No No you just need to tell iTunes where the library will be located. Copy the iTunes folder from your music folder to a external drive, then open itunes while holding down the option key. Select choose library and then choose the one on the external drive.
Simple as that.
Just remember that the external drive needs to be connected to use your iTunes library.

I was talking about using two locations at once, like two Libraries at the same time. Maybe I read his question wrong.

You can do that to if you really want to it jut makes more work for you and many more potential problems.
In preferences under advanced uncheck “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library”
In doing this it is MUCH easier for iTunes to loose the location of where your music is. iTunes will look to where ever you had that file when you added it to itunes, if you later move it iTunes no longer knows where it is.
Besides it is so much easier to back up your iTunes library if it is all in one location, just simply copy it to another drive to make your backup. Or do as I do and keep it on a mirrored raid, so both drives automatically have a copy of whatever you put on the drive.
IMHO YOU WOULD BE STUPID NOT TO LET ITUNES KEEP YOUR MUSIC ORGANIZED AND ALL ON ONE DRIVE.
If you have a portable computer and don’t have room on the internal drive for everything, then simply make 2 iTunes libraries. Keep your main big one on an external and a smaller library on the internal drive. To choose the one you want just hold down option when opening iTunes.

Really? I didn’t know about that, Instead I create aliases in the iTunes Music Library.
