[Rob LaRose] “I’m working with 6000+ frame image sequences on a network share”

    Wireless or hard wired network?

November 18, 2009 at 5:44 am in reply to: stuttering problems in FCP

[Patrick Kondelis] “I have some Flip Mino HD footage on the sequence that has a noticeable stuttering problem”

The Flip shoots h.264 and that is NOT a proper editing codec. It needs to be converted to a proper editing codec.

[Patrick Kondelis] “I have exported as a Quicktime movie hoping it was just a playback issue, but it was not”

Saying you exported as a QuickTime really tells us NOTHING. QuickTime is a wrapper that can contain NUMEROUS different codecs. What settings did you use to export?

[Patrick Kondelis] “I have tried numerous different codecs on my sequence settings (PRO RES, H.264, HDTV 720)”

h.264, is again NOT an editing codec and can actually cause playback problems. HDTV 720 is also not a codec.

Use compressor to convert theFlip Video to ProRes and then use the easy setups in FCP and choose ProRes and then create a new project.

Simply zoom the footage ever so slightly until the boom is not seen.

[Heath Weaver] “Can I dump the stuff in my Sandbox and copy the 58gb of stuff from the crapped out drive to the Sandbox without causing even more trouble?”

There is NO way for anyone to answer that. If the drive is physically failing it is possible it will corrupt your data, but then again if the drive is failing you should at least try.

[mahesh dood] “the other option being the same drive but with 7200rpm. i know this is sure to work but it costs 55$ more than the other one”

WELL worth the extra money. Go with the faster drive.

November 14, 2009 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Dropped Frames & Weird Behavior During Transitions

[Jason McCaffrey] “He transcoded all of the video into one long SD quicktime file in H.264 with the intention that it would be easy breezy for us to import into final cut and edit.”

Tell your friend that H.264 is NOT a editing codec, so its NOT going to be easy breezy to edit in Final Cut.

Convert the file to a proper editing codec. Anything on the list of easy setups in FCP will be a fine proper editing format.

November 14, 2009 at 6:34 am in reply to: Upgrade to final cut 7

[Niels Madsen] “Does anyone have any experience with this upgrade?”

The ONLY problems I have heard are from those who did not move to the new version PROPERLY.

    Clone your current system drive
    Erase and Install the OS
    Then Install the new FCS

November 14, 2009 at 2:38 am in reply to: Keynote to QT Video

[Mike Brumbaugh] “When I view the exported mov, the video starts but stops a few seconds in.”

That will happen if you don’t give timing to the slides in Keynote. You probably have the slides set to advance when spacebar is pressed in keynote. In Keynote you need to specify the length of time you want the slide to show and then have the transitions to the next slide play after that amount of time.

November 13, 2009 at 4:08 am in reply to: Whaaaat?? 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No

[Mark Palmos] “BUT I had though TIGER was 64 bit,”

I dont believe !0.4 was 64 bit. 10.5 was part 64 bit but many core components like quicktime were still 32 bit. 10.6 is fully 64 bit.

[Mark Palmos] “and that the MacPro I bought two years ago was 64 bit”

    Capable of 64 bit yes.

[Mark Palmos] “Im sure there are many others of you who are shocked by that, especially since tests show the 64 bit to be a more than 25% speed improvement for rendering. “

you FAIL to understand that the video editing software must ALSO be 64 bit. Even the new FCS3 is NOT 64 bit.

[Mark Palmos] “Anyone care to offer a layperson’s explanation of why my system is forced to 32 bits when OSX is supposedly 64”

Because MOST software out there is NOT 64bit so for compatibility reasons it does not.
