I don’t know that AJA has ever offered an “upgrade” program for the cards. Kona 3 is definitely long in the tooth at this point, although I’ll say that it’s still here in the shop. Incredible that we can still use such an old card today, but at some point the 3 will stop being supported and it’s time to move on.
If the card has moved to Legacy, then that means it definitely time to get to upgrading. Good news is upgrading to the 3G is much cheaper than purchasing the original Kona 3. In our case, we’re moving to an almost all iMac workflow with Io XTs and T-Taps.

The bouncing between systems is pretty sweet.

That’s not been an issue for us with Premiere Pro as we’re new to the app, I think we had a weird quirk at one point, but Adobe helped us out. I had a few issues with some REALLY old After Effects projects I was simply going to open for demonstration purposes.
FYI, from the show floor Day Two, seems to be a lot of love for the Cloud concept. Had a slew of folks visiting me in the Small Tree Booth chatting both shared storage and Premiere Pro. Most folks had the same experience as me. Trepidation at first, but fears allayed as systems were moved to the “cloud” concept of the apps. Both individuals and larger facilities.

It doesn’t mean I’m going to take a 100+% price increase in my annual seat costs (to stay current) without looking at the alternatives, no matter what features any company (Adobe or otherwise) has added. “
Well the good news is the alternatives at Avid have gotten much much better with Media Composer 7 and the dropping of the Symphony option down to just $2500 total means that NLE is very much in play both Mac and Windows. And Autodesk continues to improve Smoke as an editing tool.
I’m perfectly fine with the pricing because each time I added a seat of Creative Suite, I was starting at the full $1500 or whatever the current brand new pricing is. So compared to that, the Cloud model is cheaper. There is a price increase over the current “upgrade pricing” but there’s also a lot more software at my disposal. Even if I don’t use the software, that means I can bring a freelancer in to use whatever tool is available to us.
One thing I can say for certain, the Cloud model is here to stay and it doesn’t sound to me like there will much in the way of change. Have heard so much positive feedback both in Atlanta at our Atlanta Cutters meetings, via direct communications with other editors and on the show floor regarding the Cloud model that it seems Adobe has hit on the right combination of availability and price for the majority of users.
Make the right decision for your needs and move forward with it.

I would guess that’s because with Creative Cloud there’s really no need for “Creative Suites” anymore. It’s everything under the sun so just “one price” for everything as far as I can tell and have heard. We’ll get more clarity tomorrow hopefully when we can ask the gang.
I should have asked this today when I was talking to some of the Adobe gang on the show floor today but it slipped my mind as we were setting up. Kind of frantic the day before a show….

BUT two users could not have the exact same project open at the exact same time sharing the exact same media in the same shop. If you tried that with CS6 straight up and no Adobe Anywhere, you just screwed both editor.

Boxes cost money. Planning entire suites to roll out at the same time each year costs money. Now Adobe is free to roll out any application at the time it’s ready and the “Creative Suites” are going to pretty much a thing of the past. Now you simply pay ONE price and get pretty much every application Adobe makes. Before you had to pick and choose the box set you wanted. Now it’s everything under the sun.

It’s going to be essentially the same type of product, just re-tooled. Don’t see the complaint here. It’s a new license managing system that’s replacing the old one.

that doesn’t say “You MUST use our 100GB of Storage or you will be banned from Creative Cloud.” No, that statement merely says that as part of your Creative Cloud account, you get 100GB of free storage. If you have something else you are already happy with, then use it and the 100GB from Adobe just sits empty.
Again, don’t see the complaint here.

Adobe has been saying for the past year that Creative Cloud users get advanced access to new features. This just falls in line with that.

I believe you can pre-pay for the entire year and you get a discount. I think it still needs to check in to the internet, but I thought you could pre-pay a year.

Well, yeah you can edit with it forever provided you stop upgrading your computer / hardware at the last point the software is stable. So now you’re going to be stuck run outdated hardware to support really outdated software. Not saying it’s not possible as I still get emails from people that start out, “Look I’m running Final Cut Pro 5 and I have this issue….”
The update from CS6 to CS Next is tremendous and gets rid of so many of the “annoyances” that slow down the editing process I really don’t see why anyone would want to stay on 6. Adobe has been amazing in our discussions over the past year listening to our input, engaging us with their ideas and the result is nothing short of “checklist almost complete.
The POSITIVES of the Cloud are:
Must faster delivery of the product.
Lower costs since there are no physical products to make / ship.
Access to the entire family of products vs. paying a premium for specific bundles of software. Now I don’t have to choose what to give up, I can have everything.
Adobe is just the first of what will be a gradual move of pretty much everything to Cloud Delivery. I have it running on two systems at the shop and my home based systems and while I was very suspect in the beginning, it’s been a non-issue since I switched.
And the Activation / De-Activation to move around machines has been flawless so far too.
As for paying monthly, well as an Adobe owner you’d pay $30/month which is $360 / year. That’s LESS than the upgrade Prices I paid from CS5.5 to CS6 Production Premium AND it includes everything. Far beyond what we had access to with Premium.
If you don’t want to go Cloud, then don’t, but honestly I really don’t think the negatives are all that big an issue. If for whatever reason you’re going to be out of internet access for 31 days or more, I’m sure Adobe Customer Support will have some sort of a solution for you to keep going. The positives FAR outweigh the negatives. Adobe really won me over with this concept.

Generally Scratch Discs being unavailable points to an issue with your media drives. Did you have any issues with those recently?
