I just noticed on the Aja website that the Kona 3 has been moved to the Legacy section under Support. I certainly hope they will be offering drivers in the future for CS7 for the Kona3 or offer some sort of upgrade option to the Kona 3G.

The Kona 3 is really really old. 6+ years old. Support can only last for so long. I say this as a Kona 3 owner. I don’t expect full software updates for old products to continue forever. The Kona 3 has had a good run…But only AJA knows what the future holds.

But they never had any upgrade program for their hardware…so don’t expect that.

I found the old page here…

I can’t tell you for how long so get all the drivers you’re going to need and put them in a safe place.

Yeah I saw that. I have a feeling that’s referring to the Kona3G and not the Kona 3. Aja has been great. I guess eventually they have to stop support. The Kona 3 is a 6+ year old card, even though it still works great.

I feel like they’d specify if that were the case. “KONA family of products” seems all inclusive to me. There’s no saying they won’t change that down the road but I read it to mean you’re safe for the next round of Adobe software updates.

I don’t know that AJA has ever offered an “upgrade” program for the cards. Kona 3 is definitely long in the tooth at this point, although I’ll say that it’s still here in the shop. Incredible that we can still use such an old card today, but at some point the 3 will stop being supported and it’s time to move on.

If the card has moved to Legacy, then that means it definitely time to get to upgrading. Good news is upgrading to the 3G is much cheaper than purchasing the original Kona 3. In our case, we’re moving to an almost all iMac workflow with Io XTs and T-Taps.

Yeah Walter. I’ve gotten really good life out of my 2 kona 3 cards. Been using them for 5 or 6 years. upgraded from the Kona 2 and the Original IO Box. Aja is a great company with really good support. I guess I’m surprised they supported the Kona 3 as long as they did. Guess I’ll have to look at my upgrade options. Kona 3G is looking good, especially since it supports 4K. Not sure if I’ll be getting a 4K monitor any time soon, but at least I know it’s possible.

I poked around the AJA site and haven’t seen any updates on the Kona3. Has anyone heard any news?

Production is fun – but lets not forget: Nobody ever died on the video table!

According to an email I received from AJA, they have stopped supporting updates for the Kona 3. It was a great card. 6 years is pretty amazing for a piece of hardware. I bit the bullet and ordered the Kona 3G yesterday, just to make sure I can stay up-to-date. It does 4k output, so they assured me it would be around a while. If you know of anyone that want’s to purchase a used, very functional Kona 3 with breakout box, let me know.
