Any multi drive RAID is going to have better performance than a single drive in most cases. One exception is the new G-Tech Evolution series that promises 125MB/s and 200+MB/s via a single drive. Even there though, your media is unprotected.
We run 4, 8 and 16 drive RAIDs pushing a lot of speed to the clients.

If you have a Mac Pro just install another hardrive (they’re really cheap now) and do Mountain Lion install on that. That’s what we do with each OS upgrade. Install on a new drive and leave the old drive completely intact in case all heck breaks loose.
This also allows us to have a completely working system in a known state if we need to switch back for whatever reason.

We always use the AVC-Intra 100 presets as our starting point since those are Square Pixel sequences. From there we modify and to suit the current needs.
Adobe doesn’t so much worry about the codecs in the timeline as it does the frame size, pixel setting and frame rate. As long as those match up with the majority of what you have in your timeline, you should be good to go.
Now if you have a red line above your footage in the timeline, you are open to dropped frames, stuttering and audio dropout during playback which will disappear once you render everything out.
We never conform anything anymore, we just throw it all into the timeline. Your RAID speed will be the determining factor on how much realtime performance you’re going to get, even beyond just the CUDA card in our experience.

He looked great in Las Vegas last week. Still the “same ol’ Bob!” He’s really concentrating more on infrastructure these days than just software anymore.
[Steve Martin] “The two machines are working on separate “project files” as for now we just want to test to see if the “shared media” idea would work without any additional software/hardware. Has anyone had any issues with this approach? What problems (technical, logistical or otherwise) might arise? We’ll continue to test, play and generally try to “break” things and will report back with findings… wish us luck!
“This is precisely how we do the shared projects at the moment. One editor has the main project, the other editor cuts on a “B” project and we merge them together manually. Adobe Anywhere is supposed to now allow us to share the exact same project at the exact same time, though we have not tried it yet.
However, at NAB I discovered Mint by FlavourSys. They were in the Small Tree Booth demonstrating Avid project sharing, but then I came to find out, they also do Adobe Premiere Pro project sharing. I’m going to be getting a demo of this in the next few weeks and will definitely be testing this thoroughly and post my findings either in this forum or as an article. I want to compare and contrast Adobe Anywhere vs. Mint to see how they work and which seems to be better.
By the way, have you looked at the Small Tree Titanium 5? The “SAN in a lunchbox” solution allows up to 6 people to be connected directly to the system. 2 to 4 TB drives for 10 to 20 TB of shared storage. Very reasonably priced. If you add 10gig to the box, you can improve your speeds.
For a smaller project, your connections will probably work, but if the project starts getting big with lots and longer timelines, I’ll be curious how well that holds up.

Biggest questions is your RAID, how you’re configured and your playback settings. And whether you’re using AVCHD or GoPro footage.
We generally drop our playback settings down to 1/2 when editing.
AVCHD can chunk a system to slower playback. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t on our systems.
GoPro native footage doesn’t scrub correctly and can cause slower playback.
Also, when doing a final layback to tape or playback for review, we bring the entire interface over to a single screen to avoid dropped frames.

I was walking down the center aisle of South Hall and this man in a bright orange shirt and hat starts doing a little dance in front of me. Then I realized its Al. The only time I saw him all week but he always manages to make me laugh.
One of THE nicest guys in the business and someone who is always gracious with his time. And as you say, he rocks the dapper hat!

So then your plan is to keep CS6 running forever and just never upgrade your computer beyond what you have now?
Software delivery via Cloud or direct download is moving forward very quickly. It’s not like Adobe is the ONLY company doing this. It’s becoming the standard for software delivery and within the next several years, it’ll probably be the only way to get your software. So if you hate this concept, well you’re gonna be in a heap of trouble in the next few years.
I guess that’s the problem I have with this entire thread. Software delivery is evolving, boxes and “ownership” of something tangible is going away. Apple only delivers their creative software via download. Autodesk delivers Smoke 2013 via download and they have had a licensing model for years. Davinci Resolve delivers via download. If you’re this upset about the “Cloud delivery” of Adobe products then move on to something else because it’s not going away, so either evolve with the product line, or go find something that still delivers in boxes. Avid might be the only one left.
As for the monthly subscription, you better believe everyone else is looking at Adobe’s model right now and trying to figure out how to make it work for their own software, especially software that costs in the same range or more. I expect by 2014 just about all of the major players will have some sort of a Cloud Subscription model in place. Adobe is just leading the way on that among the major manufacturers.
