There is a checkbox in the Preferences or Scratch Discs (I’m not in front of a PPro system now) that says something like “Store Media Cache in the same location as the media.” That will force the Cache files to be placed in the same location as your Media. So as long as you properly put your Scratch Disc and all media out on the array, the cache files will also live there.
But it’s not the cache files that are causing you the problems, it’s the fact that you’ve got your media on your single Mac HD that’s causing the most problems. You’ll need to move all your media out onto the array.
Your link was broken so I’m not sure which product you were pointing at, but so long as it’s a two drive RAID at minimum, that should improve performance. The faster the RAID, the better the performance.

I still use a FW800 4 Drive RAID at home with no problems. Unless you’re editing uncompressed HD, FW800 will serve you just fine. I run the WeibeTech RTX4 here at home with four 2TB Western Digital Drives.
There are plenty of FW800 options out there from OWC, WeibeTech and G-Tech to choose from. I would get something with at least two drives and if you can afford a 4 drive unit, that will be even more speed. The more drives in the chassis, the more the information is spread out across more drives, the more speed you get for playback.

[Dylan Hargreaves] “This seems odd. I have mine set-up so the media cache/prefs etc are all on my Mac hard drive, which should surely be faster than any external drive. Still I get the stutters and in bigger projects awful handling unless I render everything.
“Worst possible place to put your media cache, especially if it’s a single drive. Your OS, Apps and media cache all trying to come off the same place will bring your system to a crawl eventually.
If you have a Mac Pro with multiple drives inside with one dedicated just to media, then that can work to a point. Eventually, the single drive is always slower than multiple drives in a RAID so you’ll get the stutters back and poor performance. You can actually set up a RAID inside your Mac Pro with two drives if you have the drive slots open.
All media and cache should be relegated to your media array. Connection should be no slower than FW800, faster is better.
By the way, this is true of all NLEs not just Premiere Pro. You always want your media on a dedicated array or drive.

Yep, that’s precisely the concept. Applications run on any computer through the VCA. If Apple would license OS X then we’d be able to run Mac only products through the box as well.

I had issues with all of them running from a new 2012 iMac in mountain lion. it was frustrating. what do you guys use?”
That’s weird, you should have no issues with the Pegasus for sure, lots of folks run that one. I’ve not tried the OWC products.
We run almost 100TB of Small Tree Communications in RAID 5. 48TB of it is an older model ST RAID II that is connected to a 10gig card on a Mac Pro and then distributed by another 10gig switch to the workstations. Then we have 32TB on a new Titanium 8 that is also running RAID 5 via the 10gig switch. Very shortly, we’re going to replace the 48TB ST RAID II with a new 64TB Titanium Z model that runs even faster.
At home I run a 4 drive WiebeTech RTX unit with four 2TB drives I bought at Best Buy, I think they’re Wester Digital Green drives. Connected FW800 to my iMac in RAID 5. Don’t have any issues with that either, even playing 1 hour timelines.
Wish I could help you on that one, but all I can guess is that you’re running mixed formats and you will drop frames generally during playback with mixed frame rates / mixed formats, scaling but once everything is rendered out, you should be good to go.

Are you right clicking the clips in teh timeline or the browser? You MUST right click the clips in your Media Browser. CS Next finally adds the re-link in the timeline, but prior to that you have to do it in the Media Browser.
Once you point to the first clip, everything else should reconnect on its own. I move media back and forth between my home system and the office all the time. Should be as simple as select the first clip and everything else should reconnect.

It absolutely does, they were showing 3Ds Max running on a MacBook Pro. And Adobe Suite running on a Linus laptop.
That’s the concept. Underpowered computers can connect to this and suddenly be an enterprise workstation. You install a mini app on all your workstations to run the software from the nVidia VCA.

Unless he’s using an anamorphic original which means his sequence will be anamorphic which means his export will be anamorphic. While most video players will stretch it back out to proper square pixels, not all of them will and then you end up with “squished video.”
This is why we start with AVC Intra 100 presets which ensure that we have square pixel timelines.
So in this case you would choose AVC Intra 100 / 720p60 (or 24 if you’d like)
Then when you add the first piece of footage tell Premiere to “Keep Sequence Settings” and edit away.
Then when you export the exported file will still have the same square pixels no matter what size you make it.
Ensure the output is set to avi and you should be good to go. adjust the data rate to suit your end needs.
