[Tony Brecknock] “I can import pro res no problem it is a win machine so I am having trouble exporting same. When I have 60i footage and I export to 50i am I to Assume it is legit 50i? I thought I needed a hardware encoder. I have an adrenaline and matrox le.”
As far as I know you cannot export a ProRes file from Windows because in order to make the conversion to 60i to 50i you’ll need to write a new file. Apple has not licensed the codec outside of their own machines to my knowledge.
Also, this conversion is best done through hardware not software.

July 4, 2013 at 7:11 pm in reply to: Extremely Large Premiere CS6 Project Files – Over 1 Gigabyte?![Micha McLain] “The whole “indexing” files is still quite a mystery to me. No other edit platform does this, at least that is obvious. When I’m working on event type projects, I simply have to walk away for hours and sometimes even overnight before I can start an edit. That’s just simply not professional performance.”
You need to put the Peak Files in the same location as the Media to eliminate this need every time you switch machines. Default is to put them on your internal computer. Once you move the project, you’ll have to rebuild them.
This is one of the biggest things to get used to when coming over to Pr from any other NLE. We have 6 workstations networked together and have no issues moving projects around since we started doing this. Even with a portable drive that you move from machine to machine, you’ll have no issues so long as the files are there.
Preferences > Media > Save Media Cache Files next to originals when possible.
Check that so it’s on.

July 3, 2013 at 2:01 pm in reply to: 1920 x 1080 footage on Premiere cs5.5.2…. slow as hell 🙁[Sam Davidson] “Mr Biscardi, thank you for the reply. please forgive my ignorance… i’ve never heard of a media array”
It’s essentially any configuration of 2 or more hard drives that work together as one large hard drive. The computer writes the information across all the drives at the same time so you get more speed during playback.
For the 8TB Firewire array that I have, it’s four 2TB hard drives inside the case. They are configured to act as one big hard drive so what I see on my computer is a single drive. The speed of the four drives working together exceeds the speed of a single hard drive.
The 100TB Array we have is two configurations of 16 drives working together and 8 drives working together. We can push speeds over 550MB/s on those systems.
Does that help?

July 3, 2013 at 1:46 pm in reply to: 1920 x 1080 footage on Premiere cs5.5.2…. slow as hell 🙁[Sam Davidson] “as of right now the project file and video files are all on a usb 2.0 hard drive”
Slow media drive = very poor performance especially for large projects. What you describe is textbook slow media drive performance.
[Sam Davidson] “looking around the ‘net i’m seeing people editing feature films with 1920×1080 footage on cs5.5.2… so i’m totally confused as to why i’m having so much trouble. can anyone shed any light on why my system is doing this, and how i can/if i should cheaply and quickly upgrade my system?”
You need to have a VERY fast media array to edit HD. In our case we have a 100TB media array connected to 6 main workstations (iMacs, Mac Pro and a Dell) and at home I have an 8TB Media Array connected via Firewire to an iMac. Obviously the big array is much faster than the Firewire one, but both work with long projects.
The amount of free space on your drive is also a factor. Once you get past 75% full on any hard drive, performance will suffer and it will get worse as the drive fills up.

[Shane Ross] “I’m still amazed that you think 4 hours to encode 10 hours of video to H.264 is long. That’s wicked fast.”
Sure beats 48 hours to render 3 minutes of After Effects. Yeah it was a few years ago and yeah it was around 3500 layers with light rays, shatters and all sorts of stuff. But yeah, 48 hours. 3 minutes. And it was spectacular……. 🙂

ethernet connectivity
expandability of RAID without having to re-strip and lose current data
integration with LTO archival is a plus”Look at the Small Tree solutions. They completely rock at what you’re trying to do. We have 6 primary workstations and about 15 other computers all tied together to a almost 100TB Small Tree SAN. (well a NAS really).
Been running Small Tree hardware over 6 years now I believe. Go to the Biscardi Creative Blog and search Ethernet and / or Small Tree as I’ve written multiple articles about them.

It’s an ethernet based NAS. About 100TB of shared storage. We have the volumes partitioned for easier management.
When they mount on the Mac they show up as SAN 1, San 2, etc…
When they mount up on the PC, they show up as G:, H:, I:, etc….
