    Thanks for the chuckle, Walter.

No problem Tom. Oh, and I didn’t see you playing with your toys. 🙂

I’m still running a dual 1Ghz MDD G4. Upgrading to ANY G5 model would be a big improvment. 🙂
    I’m watching…

Tell you what, when I jumped from G4 Dual 1.25 to my G5 2.0 it was light night and day so you will move into “ludicrous speed” when you make your jump. 🙂

Is it just me or was the 10.3.9 update full of nasty bugs?

It’s not just you. This is one of the worst updates I’ve seen yet. Funny how Safari, Mail and even iPhoto simply don’t work right since the update and they’re all Apple products.

It’s an update like this that really shows you need to install and test an OS update on a non-FCP system first. My laptop and one G4 don’t work correctly right now, but at least my FCP systems are un-affected. Hopefully Tiger will install better on Friday.

As far as I know, neither the Decklink or Kona have the cross-convert capabilities activated yet so you can’t do it with a capture card yet. I own the Panasonic 1200A DVCPro HD deck which DOES do a cross converter to/from 1080i to/from 720p. Just run the 1080i footage into the HD-SDI input and out the HD-SDI output at the 720p setting and then you can use the Kona 2 to capture at teh DVCPro HD codec.

One of my favorite things at this year’s NAB… FinalTouch SD and HD. (To DIE for!!!) This was shown at both the Silicon Color booth and the AJA booth with a dedicated station just for it. Simply delicious.

Yep, though I wasn’t at the show, I was told about this product and am about to install Final Touch HD along with one of the controllers. Freakin awesome to get really realtime color correction for FCP in SD and HD. Will work great with the new broadcast series we’re cutting here.

  • 5) You are dreaming if you think that “color correction” must be done on a tube monitor, as there WILL BE NO CLIENT THAT WILL EVER SEE HD ON A TUBE CRT MONITOR. Every client you will ever have from this day on, will only have a Plasma or LCD to see your image – better color correct on what they will own.

So Bob, let me get this straight. I’m cutting a series for HD Broadcast right now and you’re telling me that every single person in every single household who watches this show in HD will own a Plasma Screen or LCD Screen? A little unrealistic don’t you think? After all they are my ultimate client and they will all be watching this show from an HD feed and I’m betting that a LOT of them will still own projection or tube television for at least the next year.

First off, you’re taking the original VHS, which is not the best video quality anyway, and compressing it 5:1 through your digital camcorder. So right off the bat, the footage in your system is degraded from the original VHS due to the compression. Then as Steve noted, the quality of your VHS machine will determine the final quality of your product.

VHS is just not a great format for duplication. You can see this by just hooking two VHS machines together and run a straight dub from one machine to the other. The copy will be very poor compared to the original unless you have “professional” quality decks and then they will look marginally the same. I purchased a simple JVC S-VHS recorder from Circuit City which features an S-Video input which does yield higher quality results than normal RCA (Composite) connectors.

April 25, 2005 at 10:33 am in reply to: Buggy Capture after 10.3.9

Why’d you update to 10.3.9? Seems to be a lot of folks in this forum and others are having problems with OS 10.3.9 including yours truly. Safari, iPhoto, Mail, and others are all having problems on my Laptop and non-FCP G4’s since updating to OS 10.3.9. Since those are all Apple apps and they are screwed up with the update, 10.3.9 is going nowhere’s near my FCP systems.

Basically before you perform any OS update, you should check in here at the Cow to find out if it works with FCP or even some of your other hardware / software combo. Whenever a new update is released, I need to check the websites of about 20 different manufacturers of my software and hardware before updating to ensure that it will not cause problems with my systems. I can take a few weeks to a month before all of my software / hardware is approved and then the OS update is installed on my system.

Best advice is to re-install OS 10.3 and run the 10.3.8 combo updater and leave it at that. You can run “Archive and Install” so you don’t lose your apps and preference settings. I’m just going to wait for Tiger since it arrives on Friday and it’s just my non-FCP systems that are affected. Also ensure that your Software Updates are NOT running in automatic mode, run them in manual mode so you can decide when to update the OS.
