Converting from Sony 1080i to Panasonic 720P
Posted by Itamar Kool on April 25, 2005 at 8:26 pmI have material shot with a Sony HD cam in 1080i and I want to convert it to 720P because I want to digitize in DVCPRO HD 720P. I turns out to be very difficult as far as I’ve found out. Anybody got a solution??

April 25, 2005 at 9:19 pmIf I understand your question correctly you would need a card (such as one the decklink hd cards) capable of caputuring the hdcam information and drives fast enough to process it. Once in FCP you could then edit in dvcpro hd if you chose to. Probably not the answer you were hoping for but its the best I can do. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

April 25, 2005 at 9:23 pmAs far as I know, neither the Decklink or Kona have the cross-convert capabilities activated yet so you can’t do it with a capture card yet. I own the Panasonic 1200A DVCPro HD deck which DOES do a cross converter to/from 1080i to/from 720p. Just run the 1080i footage into the HD-SDI input and out the HD-SDI output at the 720p setting and then you can use the Kona 2 to capture at teh DVCPro HD codec.

Guys, guys the DVCPRO HD codec has specs for the 1080i formats! then you do not get into the frame size conversion. USing a board you can capture directly to the 1080i DVCPRO HD codec and get the benefit of the smaller files whaile still working at 1080.

April 26, 2005 at 2:25 pmMy problem is that most of the material for this film was shot with 720P. I haven’t bought a HD card yet. I captured the 720 P material through firewire, not using my (SD) card. Now I want to use the 1080i material in my 720P project. So….
