The best results are with a separate FW card and two of the 500GB drives striped together with the card.
You had them striped together and both running off the single FW card? That will result in pretty slow performance vs. one drive connected to the Mac FW800 Port and the second connected to the FW card. You basically get two channel performance when you run one drive on the card and one on the Mac for much faster performance right through the capacity of the units. This is how my two 500GB units have been running for the past year both on my G5 and the G4.

I am looking at the LaCie Big Disk the 1TB…Opinions…Advice…HD Workflow with it??? Some have said the LaCie box is cheap and wont do the HD Workflow correctly. Opinions Please…
Steve the LaCie’s I’ve run here for over a year are rock solid and will easily handle DVCPro HD. For true uncompressed HD, you’ll need a faster array such as a Medea FCR2X Fibrechannel. I’m supposed to be reviewing a LaCie SATA array in the near future so hopefully I’ll get some feedback on that soon.
But nothing wrong with the LaCie’s. As Mat notes in a second thread here, they sold something like a million units last year so you’ll hear more about them than any other drive manufacturer, good or bad, because they have so many products out there.
Their tech support folks are great and if you have a problem, they’ll get to the bottom of it.

For me to trust a Lacie drive. I order mine from Tekserve or otherworld computing(media) I can’t remember. They don’t get hot and they are durable. I carry them from client to client without problem
All drive manufacturers make products that fail. Every single one of them. You’re free to spend your money on any product. I use LaCie’s day in, day out along with G-RAID’s, WiebeTech and Medea’s. I just got rid of my Huge array because it doesn’t perform like my Medea’s but that doesn’t mean they don’t work. I had a friend lose an Other World Computing drive the first week. They replaced it and the second one is fine. Every manufacturer has some products go bad.
I have not had a drive related issue with the LaCie’s yet and I have no problems recommended them to anyone. Good Product, great tech support after the sale and good folks to work with.

Almost sounds like an electrical surge or something. I’ve run my LaCie’s for two weeks or so at a time with no issues whatsoever. They’re all connected to UPS which is connected to a line conditioner.
If you don’t want LaCie I’d recommend G-RAID’s.

Nice blanket statement. Too bad Firewire 800’s work so well. I’ve cut over a year with my LaCie BDE’s and my G-RAID’s with no issues on either. haven’t tried SATA as I run a Fibrechannel array for heavy duty lifting.

Final Cut 5 is really going to want dual G5 processors to really run to it’s potential. FCP 4 works fine on a Powerbook, but it’s much slower than running on a G5. I believe with FCP 5 there will be an even more pronounced performance gap between the Dual G5’s a single G4 Powerbook.

For simply transferring files, I’ve never had an issue with any PC formatted drive showing up on my Mac and allowing me to transfer files to it.
