Lacie caught on fire
Posted by Aaron Neitz on April 22, 2005 at 12:42 amwell, i didn’t see any fire, but there was smoke. and it stunk. so this is the 3rd Lacie FW that I know of that crapped out on someone.
this is the last lacie we ever buy. does anyone have a suggestion for a FW800 drive? we used it primarily as a DV50 storage archive, but once in awhile it got pressed into service for 8bit uncompressed.
thanks in advance!

April 22, 2005 at 1:02 amBuy a good drive and stick it in a good case. That way when the drive is DOA your replacement cost is minimized. Also a drive with an external power supply, although a hassle if the drive is portable, will reduce heat.
I have never had a problem with seagate drives in owc enclosures like this one:

April 22, 2005 at 1:09 amWhat kind of environment do you work in? LaCie drives are the only ones I’m aware of that do not come with fans.

April 22, 2005 at 2:20 amI have about 8 OWC Mercury drive enclosures and they don’t have fans either.
I have had pretty good luck with them BUT I know of two… one of mine and a buddies that all of a sudden stop Looping thru on the firewire ports…
One of the post houses I work has over a dozen Lacies, some of them 800’s and as far as I know, they’ve never had a problem and…Unlike you who, “occasional press them into 8bit work”, we pound the h

April 22, 2005 at 4:29 amI hate Lacie: I bought 2 drives in the past and both are dead. I will never buy one anymore. I have bought Wiebetech dual 800, it’s more expensive but never got any troubles since 2 years.

April 22, 2005 at 5:57 amAnyway, they’re all worthless as far as I’m concerned. Get a SATA kit from Firmtek. Twice the speed of any FW800 system and half the price.

April 22, 2005 at 6:17 amYeah, SATA
I’ve had lots of Lacie drives and I’ve had three crash and burn. Thank goodness I do safety backups of all off-line media on any particular project. But then again, they have paid for themselves many times over.
SATA does sound appealing to me though. I just think that with carting drives and media around, I wish there was a SATA to FW800 drive adapter for moving projects to other systems.
Anyways,

April 22, 2005 at 7:58 amCharlie,
I am sorry that you had a problem with one of our drive.
Could you send me an email at mgasquy@lacie.com with the details of your configuration as well as the serial number of your drive.
Thank you.

April 22, 2005 at 12:49 pmTry one of these. https://www.promax.com/Products/Detail/27335
It also makes a great archive tool. When you fill it up, just pop in another pair of drives and keep going. I have bought several things from Promax and I am very impressed with the company. Currently, I have a SATA Raid that they made and it is great.
While I haven’t had any trouble with my Big Disk Extreme so far and I still like Lacie products, I am planning to pick up one of those Promax drives shortly.
