I have been getting vhs tape from clients and they want me to edit there tapes down into 5 minute tapes. I have been using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder to transfer and preview my footage from my G5. Everything looks good but when I record the footage the quality is not that good. I get a blue vertical line at the beginning and the over all quality is not as good as the original tape that have given me. Is it the VHS tape or the VHS player. I have a Panasonic Omnivision 4 head. The tape I have used have been sony brand and TDK. I am just a beginner s I do not have any “professional” equipment other than FCP 4.5 HD. Is there anything I need to have to ensure my VHS copies will come out clear? Thanks. I did notice that the VHS tape they gave me was heavy.

A Time Base Corrector could be helpful. You can try using different VCR’s. I will guaruntee that each VCR will yield different results.

First off, you’re taking the original VHS, which is not the best video quality anyway, and compressing it 5:1 through your digital camcorder. So right off the bat, the footage in your system is degraded from the original VHS due to the compression. Then as Steve noted, the quality of your VHS machine will determine the final quality of your product.

VHS is just not a great format for duplication. You can see this by just hooking two VHS machines together and run a straight dub from one machine to the other. The copy will be very poor compared to the original unless you have “professional” quality decks and then they will look marginally the same. I purchased a simple JVC S-VHS recorder from Circuit City which features an S-Video input which does yield higher quality results than normal RCA (Composite) connectors.
