Philip it’s been a pleasure to “hang my head” alongside yours for the past three years or so and I wish you nothing but the best as you move forward with your business.

I think it’s cool that you want to use a video monitor, most folks new to FCP do not even know they need one! 🙂
Amen to that!
Yes, the camera or deck route is certainly a very cheap way to go as all you need is a firewire cable and you’re all set.

One interesting thing in all of this is the fact that Tiger Unleashed is still front and center on the Apple home page while the G5’s are in a smaller box below. This is the first time I can remember the release of a new PowerMac being basically pushed to one side of the page. Usually they take the front and center position.
So maybe Apple’s not all that excited about these new machines.

If you’re buying a broadcast monitor to monitor your FCP output, it needs to be connected to your deck/camera, not your computer
Actually, that’s pretty inaccurate information. You do want to connect your broadcast monitor directly to the computer as this will give you the cleanest signal.
You need to either add a PCI card or an external breakout box. If you are working in DV resolution only, then something like the Canopus ADVC-100 will work just fine. This features a Firewire to Composite / S-Video I/O. So this will send either a Composite or S-Video signal to your monitor and will accept regular analog signal in to convert to DV via Firewire.
If you are working with uncompressed video, then you’ll either need an AJA Io box which connects via Firewire, or an internal PCI card from Blackmagic, Aurora or AJA. I run both the Aurora PipePro here which features SDI Input with Component, S-Video, and Composite video outputs, and the AJA Kona 2 which features SD and HD SDI Inputs along with Component and Composite outputs.

I think they are feeling pressure from the “Dell Squeeze”. Have you seen the price and features of the Dell 24″? It blows the doors off an Apple 20″ and the 23″ for $999 or less.
Yep, I ordered a 20″ Apple display along with the G5 Dual 2.0 since it dropped to $799. In fact, I got the G5 and the Monitor for less than the price of the 2.7.

I thought the top two models had always had 3 PCI-X? One was 133 and the others were 100.
actually, you’re right, I just never noticed that.
Well one good thing about the new machines is that the old ones dropped to great prices. I just picked up an original Dual 2.0 model (8GB RAM version) for $1,899 at Club Mac along with a new 20″ display. So while the upgrade was nice, they are sure good for folks who want great deals on the older models.

2 things I noticed. The two top models have three PCI-X slots instead of one. The machines are available immediately with ship dates of 1-2 days.

The one thing I was hoping for was for them to get shorter again so they would rack mount without having to hacksaw the handles off. Oh well, I got a new hacksaw blade so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Bob, nobody is telling you to go out a buy a G5 or any other Mac. I’m with Jerry, the $1,000 price drop on the Dual 2.0 is great for me because I’ll clear out all the remaining G4’s in the shop and spread my work around more machines and more artists, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the studio. I also love the Dual Layer DVD capability as that was something I really could have used about 6 months ago.
Including a RAID in the machine? Not very likely, that’s what the X-RAID is for.
Overall, I’m actually pretty happy with what’s been announced. Nope, no 3Ghz model (at least not officially) but the 2.7 sounds pretty good.
