Amazon had the new PMs listed but pulled them. What an awful upgrade if thats what you want to call it. Looks like I’m sticking with my dual 2Ghz for a while. I’m sure we cant fault Apple because they dont make the chips but we were promised dual 3Ghz chips last year and here we are a year later still stuck under 3Ghz.

Amazon.com, an authorized Apple reseller, appears to have jumped the gun and is already listing three new Power Mac G5 models.

A low-end dual 2GHz model sports 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, a 160 GB hard drive, and a 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD+RW) for $1,994.99.

The mid-range dual 2.3GHz model is listed as including 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, a 250 GB hard drive, and a 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD+RW) for $2,494.99.

At the peak of the new product line is a dual 2.7GHz model packing 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, 250 GB hard drive, and a 16x Dual Layer SuperDrive (CD/DVD+RW) for $2,994.99. Sources added that this model also sports a ATI Radeon 9650 graphics card (one dual DVI one single) and a 1.35GHz frontside bus.

All three configurations will ship with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger preloaded. They are currently available for pre-order.

Sources claim that Apple will officially announce the new Power Macs on Wednesday. They will be available for sale at retail stores beginning 6PM on Friday.

I could see upgrading to the new 2.7 G5 if it had the nvidia 6800 DDL but I think this round of PM updates is the least exciting since the G5’s were introduced.

I’d think that any upgrade is better than no upgrade… the price drop on the dual 2 gig machine is pretty interesting… a grand less is pretty nice…

    Jerry,

You’ve been able to pick up a dual 2Ghz G5 for a grand less on Ebay for almost a year. This is extremely dissapointing, since FCP5 is coming out, I’d thought this round of G5’s would have a raid or something exciting built in. Perhaps the apple team could have come up with a quad G5 or something. Looks like I’ll have to wait for another 6 months for something better.

Bob, nobody is telling you to go out a buy a G5 or any other Mac. I’m with Jerry, the $1,000 price drop on the Dual 2.0 is great for me because I’ll clear out all the remaining G4’s in the shop and spread my work around more machines and more artists, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the studio. I also love the Dual Layer DVD capability as that was something I really could have used about 6 months ago.

Including a RAID in the machine? Not very likely, that’s what the X-RAID is for.

Overall, I’m actually pretty happy with what’s been announced. Nope, no 3Ghz model (at least not officially) but the 2.7 sounds pretty good.

This is more of a side grade than an upgrade.

Why not a G5 DP 2.5Ghz for $2,495 brand new spanking retail? Duh…?

What is the G5 DP 2.3Ghz? An overclocked G5 DP 2Ghz?

mutter, mutter, mumble, mumble, mutter, mutter…

The one thing I was hoping for was for them to get shorter again so they would rack mount without having to hacksaw the handles off. Oh well, I got a new hacksaw blade so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Just some moderated overclocked 1.8Ghz DP G5’s.

Put a new coat of paint on it and we’ll call it V2–oops that was the German’s rockets to obliterate London.

PS. Hello marketing department (lower case intended), Dual Processor 2.5Ghz Power Mac $2495…uh…duh! Sell a ton of them! It is marketing strategies like this that give the rest of computing world that impression that Apple users are blind lemmings always willing to pay Apple’s marketing department’s (lower case intended) premium margins.
