I use my iDisk account and continuously upload cuts to that for folks in other states. With Tiger, there was a demonstration of iChat A/V showing a two way chat with an FCP Canvas playing in real-time, but that was with 2 Macs. Nothing works in realtime with a PC.
Generally what I do with my clients is have conversations with them in iChat A/V (most of my clients have Macs) and we’ll chat via video conference, then I’ll upload quicktimes on my iDisk after compressing them in Sorenson Squeeze.

Actually according to B&H Photo’s website, they’re still in stock and a bunch of other websites like TapeWorks Texas, GG Technologies and about 50 others via Google. So while Sony may not be making them anymore, you can still find quite a few of them out there. I really trust them for color correction and will probably add a second one before they disappear for the second suite.

No because Apple doesn’t have a 4:4:4 codec, at least not that I’ve seen. not sure if it will be introduced with FCP 5, but both AJA and BlackMagic have 4:4:4 HD workflows available. If Apple alone does not supply the codec, I suppose they won’t mention it.

When working with 4:4:4 you’ll be capturing either with BlackMagic’s or AJA’s codec so Apple’s’ specs don’t come into play there. FCP is resolution independent so it will support whatever the on-board capture card supports.

Red is integrated with FCP as a Host application, I’m sure it’s pretty much the same as AVID.

Nope, too expensive for me to purchase that card considering the monitor is 800 lines at max. The component HD monitoring is extremely accurate for color correcting so I have no plans at this time to add the HD card.

I’ll definitely second that. Too many quirks for Tiger to come close to my FCP machines right now. Bottom line, if FCP 4.5 and OS 10.3.8 are working fine for you, don’t update yet.
I’m going to wait for FCP 5 to be released before I move Tiger to my machines and hopefully we’ll have a 10.4.1 update at that time. It runs ok on my laptop, but Safari, Mail and iPhoto still don’t work right and those are Apple apps.

The only thing when considering an internal card is whether or not you plan to add HD later. I don’t like having two capture cards internal to the machine, so going with a standard def only card now and then adding an HD card later could result in either not enough slots, or two cards that don’t play well together.
So if you’re going to go with a capture card and you know HD is in your future, I think it’s best to look at one that does SD and HD on the same card.
The beauty of an external device like the Io is that it’s external, so there’s nothing to install and you can move it to whichever machine needs to use it at that time.
