It’s a 1200A problem. I get the exact same thing when digitizing from my 1200A, especially when I’m doing batch captures of 5 or more clips at a time. As soon as I see that error, I hit ESC to stop the capture and then just start it right back up.
This will happen with both Firewire and RS-422 control. It’s a product of Panasonic doing a “super duper” dumb down of the electronics on the machine.

[Danrnw] “s there a preference to let you either crop for 4 by 3
or show the full 16 by 9 picture and have the black at top
and bottom? “Yep, you can do a center crop, LetterBox or Pan and Scan with the downconvert. It’s all done in the AJA Control Panel.

[Bret Williams] “Ah, I’m not being that heavy really. But sometimes you gotta hit people over the head.”
I kind of agree with Brett on this one. $5,000 is not a whole lot of money and if he’s been editing since 2003 (that’s when he said he got the other machine) it should be a cinch to get a new machine. My new G5, monitor, etc… were all paid off in less than a week.
So use the credit card, make the purchase and pay it off with your work. If you can’t afford the G5 based on the hours you’re working, then don’t purchase it and wait until your rates are high enough to purchase one.

[John Schell] “It can do DV over firewire or uncompressed over firewire with FCP. It also has RS-422 to control a deck.”
Just checked out your website and it says Uncompressed for FCP is coming in the second quarter of 2005. Is it there yet?
Also, I just checked Apple’s Qualified Hardware list for FCP 4.5 and your product is not on there. Has it been submitted for testing with Final Cut Pro? I never recommend any hardware unless it’s been approved by Apple, especially if you want to work with uncompressed video. Not to say your product won’t work, but a device like the AJA Io is a proven workhorse that has a good history with FCP and Apple approval to work with FCP.

[pvanwest] “If you must go back, you’ll have to do a clean install of 10.3.3 and then run the 10.3.8 updater (if it’s still around on the Apple site). A search at apple.com should find it if it’s there. “
Yep, it’s still there. I recently purchased an original model of the Dual 2.0 G5 and downloaded the 10.3.8 Comboo Updater, about two weeks ago.

[David Scott] “As I mentioned, the details are pretty sparce as we’ve only had a preliminary meeting.”
In a case like this where details are sparce, you need to take it upon yourself to force the issue a little bit by laying out some of the details yourself.
For instance you say the client wants to have a crew daily but doesn’t know how long each day. Well, the crew is going to want to be paid per day, not per hour. So I would note this by saying, “Right now you’re proposing up to 120 days of shooting, but these may not be full days. Unfortunately, my crew is hired ‘by the day,’ at $1,000 / day (just throwing out a number) and hourly is not an option. So if you want a crew everyday, we’re looking at $120,000 right there to shoot.”
If they come back and say “whoa, that’s too much money,” you can counter with something like, “Let’s look at supplying a crew for two or three days per week…..”
You just need to put down some realistic numbers that include what you honestly think it would take in your time, the crew’s time, tape costs, editing, etc….. to cut this together and put down a “probable budget” on paper. I’ve had clients propose grand scale ideas but then back off in a hurry when they realize just how much it’s going to cost. So before investing a LOT of time in a project, I’ll spend about 2 or 3 hours just really going overthing I think it will take and prepare some sort of a NON-BINDING budget proposal.
Whatever the proposal ends up being and you have a contract ready to sign, it’s VERY important to include a clause that states something like “any changes requested by the client that’s not covered in the scope of this contract shall be charged at the regular hourly / daily rates.” This is going to be a very large project with a lot of moving parts and it’s almost certain the client will make changes along the way.
Grand scale projects are fun, but also a LOT of work on your part. The Lamborghini project we did two years ago was about a 9 month project and it changed scope about a dozen times during production. Just try to be as explicit as possible in your contract and proposal and try to have fun with it!

[joshka] “hi there, is it possible to move a project file made in HD to FCP 3 and continue working on it and if yes how to go about it”
Nope, FCP is not backwards compatible. You can go from 3 to 4 but not the other way around.
You can open and edit with the raw media files in FCP 3, but you won’t be able to move your actual project files back there.

[Otis F] “Bang for buck you get a lot more with a FCP system, however if price isn’t an issue then buy yourself a FCP HD/Kona 2 system with lots of hard drive space. With enough space you can adapt your workflow to avoid any offline/online hassles, i.e. just work at online resolution until Apple sort out their media management tools. As far as I am aware this is the ONLY major downside to FCP, and something I’m sure will be addressed properly in their next release, I’m not sure if version 5 has it or not.”
I’ll agree with that. I moved from an FCP / CineWave system to the Kona 2 system and it’s just the best as far as SD / HD on the same card with awesome upconvert / downconvert capabilities.
Definitely second you on the Media Mangler, that is without a doubt the worst feature in Final Cut Pro and it’s best to avoid the darn thing. I have about 4 or 5TB of storage in the facility so offline / online is not something we do very often. Prior to FCP I used Media 100 for about 6 years and it had the simplest, easy to use re-capture feature and I’ve requested very often of the FCP team to just give us that option. All you did was select the Sequence, select the resolution, add the handles and re-capture. Perfect recaptures every time of just the material in the timeline with no extra footage and no “We have found 1,000 clips that are referenced by this timeline, would you like to add them…. well it doesn’t matter because I’ll capture them for you anyway, have a nice day.”
As for the health of AVID, they’re certainly not going anywhere soon and while I’m sure they’re not “scared” they have taken notice of Apple’s lineup. What will be interesting is to see how they leverage the Pinnacle purchase. Pinnacle’s Studio is a very good editor for folks to play with on there home PC’s, ala “iMovie,” so I’m sure AVID wants to try to get into the homes of the next generation of editors. I would expect to see that produce re-branded “AVID Studio” and start appearing in Best Buy, Circuit City and others within the year along with a splashy commercial campaign.

Not sure if we have any actual Trainer Certification Courses here in Atlanta. If you look on the Apple website, you can find the locations for the Apple Certified classes which are in Boston and California. I’m probably going to make it up to the Boston classes one of these days.
