Kona real time analog HD downconvert?
Posted by Alan on May 11, 2005 at 1:55 amCan anybody tell me if there is an AJA solution (much like Cinewave had) that will allow me to capture, edit and playback in 720p HD (varicam footage) and simultaneously playback realtime down-converted SD footage to a component router? Cinewave did it and I need it! Thanks in advance. My workflow consists of shooting on varicam, editing 720p uncompressed and delivering BetaSP.

May 11, 2005 at 2:16 amyes – Kona 2 will playback the 720p sequence, and give you a simultaneous SDI downconvert, AND give you a NTSC Y R-Y B-Y analog component downconvert as well to a Beta VTR or component TV monitor – all at the same time. And yes, it does this in capture mode as well as editing and playback.

May 11, 2005 at 3:27 pmOn a related note, is it really a necessity to have the optional SDI board, BKM120D, for PVM20L5 if the Kona 2 does the downconvert to SDI and component? Just wondering, b/c specing out a system with promax. I’m just seeing if others out there have the SDI card. Does it really have any benefit?
Thanks.

Not completely necessary but certainly a nice option and the SDI signal is a bit cleaner. I have it installed on my PVM20L5/1 and it does have a better image than the Component, especially when working with digital originated footage.

It works perfectly and like the CineWave, Kona 2 will output both HD and downconverte SD simultaneously. I switched from Cine to the K2 and it’s a pretty seamless transition.

May 11, 2005 at 6:24 pmHey walter, do you have any experience with the HD-SDI card(not sure the part number) for that monitor? Trying to finish up my Kona2 suite and thinking about monitoring the HD for color correction.

Nope, too expensive for me to purchase that card considering the monitor is 800 lines at max. The component HD monitoring is extremely accurate for color correcting so I have no plans at this time to add the HD card.

I’m not sure how this is completely possible. Consider the fact that the optional SDI card for the 20L5 is doing the same exact things as either (A) an AJA converter box or (B) the YUV analog output from the Kona2 itself. Both the Sony card and the AJA hardware are converting 10-bit uncompressed video to YIQ analog space (NTSC) in the end. After all, the CRT tube *is* analog! There’s a point the digital stream becomes analog. As we all know, AJA has the best darn tootin’ conversion hardware out there. I don’t see how Sony’s card, performing the same exact task could be any better.

May 11, 2005 at 10:43 pmIf you boys would simply use the AJA HDP (or Decklink HD Link) and a Sony
SDM-P234b for $1999, you will get a 23″ full 1920×1200 resolution, and not have to worry about the 800 line limitation – aside from the fact that you can’t even get the PVM-20L5/1 anymore. And just for the record, I would take an “old” PVM-20L5/1 ANYDAY over the “new” Sony Luma LDM series.

Actually according to B&H Photo’s website, they’re still in stock and a bunch of other websites like TapeWorks Texas, GG Technologies and about 50 others via Google. So while Sony may not be making them anymore, you can still find quite a few of them out there. I really trust them for color correction and will probably add a second one before they disappear for the second suite.

May 12, 2005 at 2:08 amDepending on how long the cable run to the monitor is (mine is about 65 feet from the rack in the next room), converting the signal from SDI to component at the monitor vs running component cables all the way from the rack does seem to have a positive affect on image quality. I don’t have the SDI board, but I decided to send an SDI signal from the rack and use an AJA converter close to the monitor with a 3 foot component Canare cable into the monitor.
