Generally for NTSC it is lower field first and for PAL it is upper field first. However, I’ve found that in some (not all) Motion projects, they work better with Upper Field first. Weird I know, but if the titles look smooth, they leave it alone. 🙂

sorry, totally missed the frame size. not sure what will be good enough to play that back in realtime except a fibrechannel array, but even there, not sure.

Doubtful they would have the sustained throughput for uncompressed HD. DVCPro HD or HDV sure, but uncompressed, not likely.

I wouldn’t even try it at this point. Media Manager is likely to cause you far more problems than it will help.
And it’s not just moving the media onto one or two drives, they also need to be cleaned up.
Are you running a dual monitor system by any chance? If so, make sure all of FCP is on one monitor. Sometimes if the project is on the edge of not working, having the app spread across two monitors can hurt performance. Just go to Windows > Standard for the arrangement.

No, but VAR’s should have systems set up that you can test and try out before you buy. All the VAR’s here in my area have multiple systems from a basic DV to full blown HD systems which users can test out.

Why are you installing the older versions of FCP? You don’t need to. Just install FCP Studio and it will ask you to manually enter the old serial number.
I have a second G5 here and did the entire Erase the Install procedure on it and then ran FCP Studio install. Worked just fine and it’s editing happily on some test projects right now.
Just do the Clean Install of Tiger by erasing the harddrive, then install Tiger on it. Update it to 10.4.1. Install FCP Studio. When prompted, enter the serial number from your FCP 4.0. Then Studio will install.
With FCP 4, Apple negated the need to have a previous version installed, it just prompts you for the old serial number.

According to a thread over on the AJA forum, timeline and deck control via jog / shuttle / play / reverse, etc… does not work right now from the Mackie controller. I’m still using the Bella USA Pro Keyboard right now with FCP.

If the DVCPro HD codec is available for the PC and installed on that particular PC, then I guess it should in Quicktime player. May need a faster drive than what’s installed in a standard PC.

http://www.crucial.com is the only place I recommend. I also recommend keeping all the RAM as a matched set, i.e. all from the same manufacturer.
When I purchase a new machine, I order it with the bare minimum RAM, then replace it all with Crucial RAM. 4GB in one G5, 3GB in another G5 and 1GB in my Powerbook, all working fine.
