Just upgraded my G5 2Ghz dual (4GB ram) with Final cut studio HD to edit footage from my Sony HDV camera, system speed is very dissapointing when working with HD and motion 2 is very jerky, even when playing from my scsi array, is there any way of getting better performance?

What do you mean by disappointing? I get three streams of DVCPro HD with my FW 800 array with realtime color correction and much more with my Fibrechannel array. What’s the system doing that disappointing and did you test this system with HDV before your ordered it?

[Nick Bennett] “motion 2 is very jerky,”

What graphics card are you running? Motion relies very heavily on the graphics card, not just the CPU or RAM. I have the nVidia Ultra 6800 which makes Motion smoke.

disapoi’nt v.t. fail to fulfil desire or expectation of, break appointment with, (person or abs.; disappointed at failure failure, in thing of one expected gain, that to find, etc.

And no here in the UK Apple aren’t in the business of lending out machines for customers to test, besides which the machine wasn’t built specificaly for HDV.

But thankyou for your advice on the graphics card to speed up the perfomance of Motion.

I’II remember not to bother you again.

No, but VAR’s should have systems set up that you can test and try out before you buy. All the VAR’s here in my area have multiple systems from a basic DV to full blown HD systems which users can test out.

You are not alone. HDV editing is slow on my dual 2.5 as well.

I get similar performance on my Avid Xpress Pro HDV.

I don’t think HDV was meant to be a post format. Because it uses Long GOP codec (MPEG-2) it really should just be an acquisition format.

here’s how I got around the speed hit: I transcode all my HDV footage to DVCPro HD 60i and edit that way. Speed is vastly improved and I have an actual intra-frame codec to work with instead of having FCP 5 do the heavy math on the Mpeg-2 codec…

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the advice Greg, I’m going to give that a try.

Greg, I’m just getting started with HDV, too. All of the stuff I do will show in regular NTSC, not HD – what should I transcode to right away? DV25? And what is the best way of doing this?

    Thanks!

Greg, how do you do that? I can’t change anything in FCS to allow me to do that. Are you capturing using the Component Out of your HDV machine? FCS will not allow chages to the HDV settings on my system. I’d love to be able to change the settings so that I can also capture in SD video but if you are using the firewire of the deck or camera, you can’t change any settings.
