can anyone suggest why i am seeing major dv artifacts in my oversized sequence (2160×576).

i am layering standard Pal DV and text and seeing horrendous artifacts – looks more like im viewing in low rez – though all the settings are set to high and full.

when exporting a QT movie and hitting apple-J and selecting high quality viewing option the artifacts are reduced a little but still looks like its exported at low or medium rez.

any ideas – is this just quicktime and oversized sequences not getting along or something completely different?

    thanks

The DV codecs are designed only for a fixed size, and in PAL, that’s 720×576. If you need to work in a sequence with larger dimensions like you’re doing, I’d suggest either the uncompressed codecs, or if hard disc space is an issue, try using PhotoJPEG@755 quality. I think that will work great for you.

thanks graeme you are exactly right. tried dropping clips in an apple 8bit timeline and voila!!! goodbye artifacts!

now the issue is that the timeline and subsequent quicktime movies will not play back off the internal sata drives.

i have a spare Atto UL3D card and a 70gig scsi drive – should that do the trick?

    thanks

Try the PhotoJPEG@75% codec and I think you might get playback ok or your internal SATA. If not, you’ll need a RAID of drives. I don’t think a single SCSI will be any better than your internal SATA.

Nope because you have mis-matched clips and timeline. Your footage is DV PAL and your timeline is uncompressed 8bit. You’ll need to recapture all your footage to the 8bit codec to playback in realtime. If your timeline doesn’t match your capture settings, you’ll always have to render your footage, no matter how fast your drives are.

Walter, it’s not that it’s DV on an uncompressed timeline, but that he’s using a HD sized timeline with the DV codec. When instead he uses a uncompressed timeline, the data rate goes through the roof and his hard drive just doesn’t have the speed. That’s why I was suggesting a compressed codec of high quality like PhotoJPEG@75%.

Unfortunately the size he’s using 2048×576 is too big for any of the compressed HD codec like DVCproHD either, so he’s pretty stuck.

Oh, I was just going by his original post:

“i am layering standard Pal DV and text and seeing horrendous artifacts – looks more like im viewing in low rez – though all the settings are set to high and full. ”

So there I read that he was using PAL DV footage and then you suggested he put that footage into an uncompressed timeline. So he won’t get RT playback no matter the harddrive with that combination unless he owns a CineWave.

I don’t think any video card will send 2k wide images out to a monitor though….

Um, I don’t see any question about HD or 2K in his query. He’s just asking how to make his DV PAL footage playback in real-time in an 8bit timeline. CineWave is the only answer. Or, recapture all the DV as 8bit.

I guess I’m confused by your mention of uncompressed HD and 2K in this thread.

    hey guys,

my original question was that my dv footage in an oversized sequence looked terrible, once i copied that footage into an 8bit timeline all the arifacts on the text and the dv footage dissapeared – hoorah!!.

my next problem is that the timeline and subsequent exported QT movie would not play without dropping frames even once rendered.

my thought that the 8bit timeline was too much for my internal SATA drive and that adding a scsi card and drive would help with smooth playback.

i understand about having mismatched codecs and that is not the problem – incidently i do have a cinewave but the cinewave codec doesnt seem to support my superwide sequence – get an error saying that my codec doesnt support this frame size and a red canvas.

so now my question is will my sequence play back over the scsi drive? im not interested in RT performance just smooth playback once a sequence is rendered.

    thanks
