I totally agree with Ted on this point of using Fast Blur.
To create shadows, Apply fill effect and then Check which blur effects suits for you to soften the shadows. Also play with Opacity of shadow layer.

Select the Solid in Timeline, Go to Adobe Bridge and Double click on the Preset.
This will automatically apply the Preset to the solid that you have selected in the Timeline.

Try to delete your Prefs File.
Hold Ctrl/Cmnd + alt/Optn + Shift while AE starts and a window will pop up: “Delete the Adobe After effect Settings file??[Yes/No].

Go to the Particular Properties in Effects Control Panel.
Now twirl down the Emitter Controls and Select 10x Linear, 10x Smooth Or Exact instead of Linear in Position Subframe.
This will change the jagged edges to smooth one.
