That must be the Disk or Media Cache. Press ” Cmnd + Optn + ; ” and Go to Media and Disk Cache. Check the path of Disk and Media cache and allotted Maximum Disk Cache Size.

Press ” Alt/Optn + ‘ ” and ” Shift + ‘ ” to enable Proportional Grid and Grid respectively.
Press ” Cntl + Shift + ‘ ” to Enable Snap to grid.
You can crop the layer visibility by using Region of Interest Option. But this is not cropping of layer. Its only affecting its visibility.
In the same way use a mask and Toggle Off the Mask and Path Visibility to crop the layer visibility.
This will create an impression that you are cropping without any mask.
Though you have to change the Bounding Box of Mask path to change the shape.
Don’t know any other option to crop off part of a layer.

Levi is right.
Increase the Shutter Angle value to a higher number. By default it is 180 degree.
