I would suggest you to convert it using a different codec.
.h264 use temporal or interframe compression which creates problem for AE.
Convert .mov to animation or PNG codec.
It might solve your problem.
But the file isn’t playing in VLC too. This might be the hardware issue.
Also check and compare the specs of you PC and Mac.

I am with Ted on staying with AE. It depends on what you have to do in life and what you love. I too love AE a lot and experimenting on it. But in my country too, Smoke is used for High End production. I have many freinds who are earning pretty well because they migrated from Ae to smoke.
At the end it depends on personl satisfaction. I am happy with AE and want to stay with it in future too.Vishesh Arora

I would also suggest you to go for more RAM. AE loves RAM when it comes to rendering.
For improving performance you can read articles from Adobe provided by Todd.

The information is incomplete.
What codec you have used for rendering? Is it lossless or compressed?
If it is Lossless, the playback will have some problem.
Also, Using Scale Parameter creates Jerk if the values are too big because of the math used in scale.
I would suggest you to make the comp 3D and then displace is in Z – axis to mimic the scale effect.

In this case You might have to Roto out the bumps(To show the increase in size) and blend them using fadein and fadeout in such a way that it will look seamless.
You can manually increase the size(of Rotoscoped layer) to show time lapse.

Liquify Effect(Distort>Liquify) may do the trick.
Check the Tutorial on how to use it.
You can animate Distortion Percentage to show the gradual change.

I would suggest you to make drops usings a solid with masks of different shape and size. Particle system(If you are using CC particle World) will not create the effect of drops easily and you have to struggle a lot to match the FEEL of particles and the slick .
