I agree with both of you to use Curves effect. But I gave the Levels settings just in case if guy want to stick with it.

Videos with Alpha Channel may look awkward in video players as they don’t have the option to read alpha channel. But once imported in any software like AE that reads alpha channel, it looks perfectly fine.

You are changing the Output White Value which is affecting the whole image.
Try tweaking the Input White and Input Black values.

Your Project in Sony Vegas has different Resolution Settings.
See the settings difference:

Make sure you render with 720 X 480 resolution from AE.
To do so, Make a new Comp of 720 X 480 resolution in AE and import your 1280 X 720 comp in it. Now select your comp layer and Press ” Cntl + Alt + F “ and then render.

You can use Photo – JPEG Video Codec with MOV as it will compress around 70% and gives a good quality. If you want lossless then go for PNG Video Codec.

“adding skid marks and/or tire smoke burn would be an added plus.”
For skid marks, you can animate a Mask on a solid layer with Roughen Edges effect.
For tire smoke burn, using Red Giants Trapcode Particular is an easy and great way.
You can also create sparks using CC Particle World.

Also…when you opt for “selected comps only” should it be smart enough to also collect any precomp material as well?
Yes, Ae is smart enough to collect the files which are in a the precomps.
Though I have suffered from the same problem. Most of the times it skips the files. I don’t know why it happens.
