Depends on your hardware. If you have a disk array capable of uncompressed SD in 4:4:4, you could downconvert first without loosing anything. If not, I’d rather key in native DVCProHD and downconvert later ro conceal minor artefacts.

If you are aiming for SD in the end: Yes, it will help a lot!

The HVX200 can record in 4:2:2 (better color resolution) plus it’s HD, so every little artefact on the edges of the key will be scaled down (hopefully into oblivion) when converting the final composite to SD.

Regarding lighting and shooting, please google for blue- and greenscreen, there’s tons of info about that.

And, yes, DV sucks for that purpose, but try DV Matte Pro from DV Garage, it should help for a decent price.

I’m not sure I understand what you really want to do. You can’t use those native streams in FCE directly. One thing you can do: Get MPEG Streamclip too (free again) and convert your native HDV stream into something you can use in FCE, like DV. Is this what you are looking for?

Get the free DVHS-Cap from Apple (part of the developer stuff). It can capture incoming HDV native as an MPEG-Stream.

For home use? With DV and HDV?
Get a new iMac and use iMovie if you don’t want to do much learning. Get Final Cut Express if you are into something more powerful and ready to do some studying of manuals and lots of helpful stuff on the net.

Believe me, I’ve been working with PCs and Macs for 20 years, and there’s nothing in same price range that can beat the Mac experience. Yes, Avid on a PC is a serious editing system, but that means serious $$$.

Which device was used for recording the audio? Was it synced? Even digital devices can run out of sync with time, if they don’t have a reference signal.
