O.T. – Workstations
Posted by Kevin Ham on February 9, 2007 at 6:58 amIt’s a little off topic but wanted to see what you all think since we are editors here. Any suggestions on what workstations (desks) that you like, which are affordable for home use? I’m looking to buy one and would love to here from you guys/girls.

Get a new iMac and use iMovie if you don’t want to do much learning. Get Final Cut Express if you are into something more powerful and ready to do some studying of manuals and lots of helpful stuff on the net.Believe me, I’ve been working with PCs and Macs for 20 years, and there’s nothing in same price range that can beat the Mac experience. Yes, Avid on a PC is a serious editing system, but that means serious $$$.

http://www.anthro.com. We’ve purchased two of them now, the Fit Console and the Standard Desk along with the standard table. A little bit pricey for some of them, but they are absolutely rock solid and almost infinitely expandable. Really nice people to deal with as well.

February 9, 2007 at 3:56 pmI have the Ikea Galant top on the motorized table base, also found at Ikea. I’m pretty sure it’s also part of the Galant series. I first saw it in the store attached to a Galant table top.
The motorized base lets me raise & lower the desk. I find this incredibly convenient when I need to get under the desk or work on the gear on the desk. Also, after a long day editing, when I have just a little bit more to go but my whole body is telling me I have to get up, I can raise the desk and stand up and wrap up my day more comfortably.
I just tried to find it online, but I couldn’t find it in the Ikea catalog. I hope that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped selling it!
I still need a better chair, but I’m more than happy with this desk. Worth the cost!

Actually this is one of the reasons why I purchased the Anthro Fit Console, the entire keyboard shelf lifts up so I can stand for part of the day, I like that. My monitors are also on swing arms.
Anthro also makes a series of desks that automatically raise and lower, but I really didn’t need the automation. Though there are those days when I wish I did have that……

I’m a gal with a back problem!
I need the motor! With all the gear on my desk, even if my spine did cooperate, I doubt I could lift 150 lbs. (I’m pretty sure that’s the weight limit for the motor…and I know I’m at the upper limit…)
I suppose I could relocate the gear, but alas, my current space is limited.

February 9, 2007 at 4:16 pmYes I’m looking for furniture, a workstation desk for editing. Hoping to find something for under a thousand as I’m on a tight budget. Thanks everyone. Keep it coming and I’ll look into everything listed.

February 9, 2007 at 6:03 pmI needed to set up an assistant edit bay. An old door on 2 filing cabinets worked in a pinch. Real cheap too.

February 9, 2007 at 8:44 pmDebe, I was typing the same thing when I saw your post. I have the Galant, too (and love it). It’s good because depending on your room, you can make it quite a bit bigger or smaller with additional extentions.
Here’s a link to it:

February 10, 2007 at 6:37 amI have a 6′ or 7′ long butcher block trestle table from Ikea. I think it was around $200. I’ve got a flatbed scanner, a mixer, 2 19″ LCD monitors, a 14″ CRT, & a pair of speakers on that desk. Not to mention the keyboard, mouse & pencil cup.
And all the monitors are at or below eye level, so I don’t get a sore neck after an 11 hour day.
