  • Is it still compressed when taken out of the BNC?

Posted by Arnljot Bringedal on February 12, 2007 at 6:30 pm

    Hey!

    I use a sony Z1 and a canon xm2 ( GL2 in the US? )

I am out in the field as I am typing this…

I have NEVER done a greenscreen shot – and I have heard that DV – is less than ideal ( or maybe hopeless) to pull a key from….

My question: If i capture analoge from the BNC – or the “yellow ” line out – output…. Is it still DV? Can I cheat this way to get a good key?

The editor called me and wants me to do a greenscreen shot where I am, told him that I only brought DV – and that it probably wont work…..

Well, U could hook up the Analog compsite out to a Digi-Beta deck but still, look @ the camera u r capturing from: It is still 4.1.1 color space and that is where the problems with keying are. U could hook up the Analog compsite out to a capture card and capture live -10bit uncompressed – but again, same deal with the 1/3 CCD camera. Some people can pull an adequate key from DV footage. It’s subjective though.

Yes, it’s still compressed. It’s compressed from the moment the DV Camera records the image. Don’t use composite out (the yellow rca/bnc) that won’t help.
Light the green screen as evenly as possible and you might be ok.

The guy in the adjacent hotelroom has an HVX-200 – and I can borrow it.

Will that give a better key? And what “mode” should I shoot in to get the best key?
( will have to downconwert to SD – before I send it back home )

You’ll get better results with that camera. Shoot in the Hi-Def mode. 1080p
I think shooting in progressive mode will yield better keying results also.

Do you have any kind of external deck? That’s the real question. If you can get ahold of a Beta or Digibeta deck then yes, you can do as you suggest. But I wouldn’t use composite out. The S-Video out will be ok, though. Most of those cameras don’t compress to 4:1:1 until after it passes those ports. You CAN record a non-compressed video signal out of them as long as you have something to record on.

If you are aiming for SD in the end: Yes, it will help a lot!

The HVX200 can record in 4:2:2 (better color resolution) plus it’s HD, so every little artefact on the edges of the key will be scaled down (hopefully into oblivion) when converting the final composite to SD.

But should I do the keying while its HD and then downconvert?

Or: Downconvert and then do the key?

Thanks for helping folks! Nice crowd here at the cow.

Would any kind of capture card – AJA – do the trick?

[Becker] “Would any kind of capture card – AJA – do the trick?”

The head of the HVX-200 is uncompressed. If you were to feed directly out of that camera to an AJA card you could capture 8 or 10bit uncompressed video which would lead to a very nice key.

Should clarify that, it’s uncompressed BEFORE you record to tape. If you record the signal to tape, and then play that out of the camera to your system, you’re just outputting DV. But simply record the signal directly from the camera to your system live, and it will be uncompresed.
