Well, since Graeme is too modest to tell: definitely use his plug-ins before trying to upscale in Color.
In this case his de-interlacer (the one in Color really sucks), maybe with motion detection, plus some chroma enhancements. There are some very helpful fx-node trees coming with his set.
Regarding ReSizer and InstantHD: I’ve tested both of them with FCP (and written about the whole, tedious process). I’d say: They do what they say, but you’ll need to do quite some tweaking according to your imagery until you really see much of an improvement over FCP itself.
If you want to work with Color anyway, I’d rather suggest buying Graeme’s tools. They can do many more things, you’ll learn a lot about Color in the process and you can achieve everything the specialised plug-ins can do with some clever combination of his filters.

HDV Rack works very well for us under BootCamp on a MacBook (non Pro). Fits perfectly to our HVX-200

I’d rather keep the project physically separate from the media files, since the whole work can be reproduced from that information in case of a crash (if you work with TC based logs).

Mixed format timelines are a feature in FCP 6.

You can use HDV in a DV timeline, but you’ll need to render.

If you want the extra safety: yes.

But I’d rather buy a case that makes swapping drives easy and put a copy on the shelf then. The easiest one to change drives comes from Fantec (no screws), Raidsonic or others offer more sturdy housings with frames to swap drives.

A single drive will be enough for DV and HDV, their data rate is the same.

RAID 0 is fast, RAID 1 is safe.

RAID 0 not only doubles the risk of data loss, but statistically even quadruples it: If one drive dies, twice the amount of data is lost on both. RAID 1 is much safer than one drive, the probability that both die at the same time is very low. But you’ll have half the capacity only.

Even if you capture the whole tape, do yourself a favour and capture it with in and out markers.
I’ve seen audio sync slipping at times when capturing “direct” but never had this issue when capturing logged clips.

Does capture work if you grab it as native HDV? I’d rather downconvert in FCP anyway, the Sonys are not doing the greatest job there.
