Sorry, that was a typo. The MBP is short for MacBook Pro, and I don’t remember if it was in the FCP manual or Apple’s white paper for ProRes, but the MBP is not up to ProRes HQ, you’ll need a MacPro for that.

But unless you are heading for film-out, ProRes is quite OK.

Hi Shane,

you should see Pan’s Labyrinth, it’s a great movie. One of the very few where I’ve seen CGI used in a deeply touching, human context and not as a thunderstorm of effects just to impress the audience.

That said, I like this kind of natural object transitions as well. If you need more control over mattes in FCP, have a look at these plug-ins, they include better masking:

I tend to use a compositing program for such work, but with these Plug-ins FCP should be up to the job.

If you don’t have progressive footage (so you can go the retiming route), that will take forever. Have them hardware converted or use them right away in your edit and replace the ones you need with Nattress’ G Converter later.

We have X1900s in all machines we are using with Prores and have no rendering issues with these. But recently a collegue of mine who is using ProRes only occasionally reported something similar as you do, and he has the standard NVidia card.

I can fully recommend this product for any beginner in Color. I bought it and even if you did a lot of color grading before on other systems it get’s you started in Color right away.
